NARGA is a division that provides Information and Communication Technology services to all students within the Faculties of Science and AgriSciences at Stellenbosch University (SU), to enable them to succeed in their studies.

The incumbent will form part of a team responsible for administrating and developing various systems within the Faculties of Science and AgriSciences.

This is a dynamic environment where skills are developed and tasks are assigned as the need changes. Please note that the level of appointment and remuneration will be negotiated in line with experience.


Duties/Pligte
Students and Lecturers:

Providing technical support to students and lecturers experiencing technical problems – including after-hours support with assessments, inaugural lectures and seminars.

Administrative:

Handling and reporting on day-to-day tasks in NARGA (including upgrading of computers and installation of new computers).

Scheduling and booking venues according to timetables.

Ensuring that all NARGA venues comply with the safety policy and reporting safety and security issues. Acting as overall safety representative of all NARGA venues.

Completing ad hoc tasks necessary to ensure the smooth operation of the Computer Users Area (RGA) and lecture rooms, and rendering essential services by:

Maintaining stores and their content.

Moving equipment as requested.

Entering the necessary budget items and requested requisitions into the financial system.

Rendering assistance regarding the general maintenance and operation of NARGA as requested.

Inspecting the general tidiness of lecture rooms and submitting reports on breakages where necessary.

Maintaining and updating the NARGA asset register.

Technical:

Ensuring that all computer equipment in all of NARGA’s rooms (Main CUA rooms, Satellite CUA rooms, kiosks and lecture rooms) are always in working order.

Regularly checking lecture room equipment and reporting if faulty: projectors, screens, lighting, air conditioning, sound equipment, batteries, etc.

Standardising computer equipment, software and procedures in lecture rooms.

Offering full-time technical assistance during classes to solve technical problems (hard- and software) without any delay.

Rendering assistance in NARGA lecture rooms during office hours.

Providing management information regarding usage of rooms.

Providing a multimedia service to users during seminars, conferences, etc.

Managing NARGA’s printers: general maintenance, stock management of paper and cartridges.


Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes
An ICT degree / diploma with two years’ relevant experience, OR

a relevant ICT certificate with three years’ relevant ICT experience, OR

four years’ relevant ICT experience.

Strong, proven computer skills – hardware and software.

Demonstrated ability to solve problems innovatively.

Proven analytical skills.

A high level of accuracy.

Sound verbal and written communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to work both in a team, as well as independently.

Outstanding interpersonal relations.

Candidates may be required to take aptitude, psychometric and proficiency tests.


Recommendation/Aanbeveling
Any other IT-related industry qualifications.

A+ -and/or N+ -qualification.

Experience and basic knowledge of Linux.

Experience in scripting in program languages such as PowerShell, Java and C++.

Proficient in at least two official South African languages.

Duties/Pligte
Providing an effective and efficient administrative support service to the Deputy Director General (DDG): Chief of Operations (COO), WCGHW and Vice-Dean: Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University (FMHS SU).

Maintaining the repository of all relevant documents related to the Multi-Lateral Agreement (MLA) process.
Working with the co-chairs to develop reports for the Health Platform Committee (HPC)/Joint Agreement Governance Council (JAGC)/Joint Standing Advisory Committees (JSACs).
Liaising with the parties in respect of the transitional arrangements within the Bilateral Agreement.
Providing secretariat and administrative support, including writing of minutes for the revision of the MLA, liaising with the co-chairs and bilateral teams as well as other parties involved in the review process, such as legal teams, and collating information to support the process, including data.
Preparing documentation for consultation.
Tracking the changes to the revised MLA document and redrafting to completion.
Providing an efficient and effective meeting management support service to the DDG: COO,WCGHW and the Vice-Dean: FMHS SU.

Providing a secretarial support service and assisting with the planning and organising of meetings, workshops and stakeholder’s engagements.

Providing an effective and efficient financial and SCM support service to the DDG: COO, WCGHW and Vice-Dean: FMHS SU.

Coordinating meetings, workshops and strategic planning sessions in line with budgetary processes and constraints.

Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes
Senior certificate (Grade 12) and a relevant post-school qualification.
At least two years’ relevant administrative and meeting management experience in the Higher Education or Health Sector.
A valid driver’s licence (Code B/EB).
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in at least two of the official languages of the Western Cape.
Advanced computer literacy (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams).
The ability to function independently and to work in a team.

Service delivery:

Call / contact centre management: providing internet, telephone, email information to callers and referrals for mental health or other care with a 24 hour turn-around period.
Maintaining the MHIC website, service provider database, Facebook, X (formerly known as Twitter); regularly updating the content, and verifying and registering new mental health professionals on the service provider database.
Media liaising: compiling and distributing press releases, assisting journalists in writing mental health (MH) related articles, arranging interviews with MH professionals for radio / TV.
Liaising with local, national and international mental health role-players, such as SAFMH, Cape Mental Health, CPMH, SADAG, the DANA Alliance for Brain Initiatives, WFMH, NIMH and IBRO.
Liaising with Health24 and sahealthinfo to review, update or write new information for their websites.
Collaborating with research, academic, governmental, non-governmental, and consumer bodies.
Strong emphasis on comsumer advocacy; marketing and promoting MHIC services and products (liaising with different stake holders such as the media, corporate partners, pharmaceutical companies, MH advocacy groups, other Stellenbosch University (SU) departments and international organisations such as the Dana Alliance to increase awareness of MHIC activities).
Community interaction:

Hosting, coordinating and participating in local mental health awareness campaigns.
Administration and funding:

Writing funding proposals and sponsorship letters to possible donors / funders / sponsors.
Daily logging of call centre enquiries, website and service provider database activities.
Archiving MHIC orders and payments.
Updating MHIC information brochures (in Afrikaans, English, and isiXhosa) and compiling new ones as the need arises.
Supervising volunteers at the MHIC.
Research / academic involvement:

Academic year day participation at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, SU.
Attending and presenting MHIC data at relevant workshops.
Attending and presenting data at local and international conferences.
Undertaking research studies and surveys.
Assisting with recruitment of participants for research studies of the MRC Unit on Risk and Resilience in mental disorders.
Assisting with drawing blood / collecting samples for different research trials.

At least two years’ experience of working in the mental health field.
Clinical trials experience.
The ability to use social media as a marketing tool with confidence.
Excellent interpersonal, as well as verbal and written communication skills.

Computer literacy.

Recommendation/Aanbeveling
Previous exposure to project management practices.
Research experience in a relevant area (e.g. stigmatisation).
A qualification to do clinical work for research trials such as drawing blood, collecting saliva samples, or any other clinical work needed by the Unit.

Good working knowledge of Publisher, as well as SPSS statistics software.

The Department of Physiological Sciences in the Faculty of Science at Stellenbosch University (SU) teaches undergraduate and postgraduate modules on all systems of human physiology, including: the human body as a unit, organs, tissues, cells and integrative physiology in response to external or internal stressors.

We have very active research groups focusing on diseases associated with lifestyle or cellular injury, including cancer, cardio-oncology, cardio-metabolic and integrated metabolic research, clinical hemorheology, muscle research, bio-inspired drug delivery research and neurodegenerative diseases.

Research models include healthy and diseased human volunteers, or samples derived from patients and small laboratory animal models simulating human pathological conditions.

The abovementioned allow the researchers to investigate mechanisms of the adaptive responses to internal or external stressors or molecular drivers of the pathology, whole body and tissue sample analysis, and in vitro cell and molecular aspects.

Duties/Pligte
Tissue culture laboratory

Managing the tissue culture laboratory.

Providing technical support regarding various techniques employed by academic staff and postgraduate students with their research.

Responsible for maintaining tissue culture-associated equipment, including flow hoods, incubators, and liquid nitrogen storage.

Supporting the departmental administrative and operational activities associated with the equipment maintenance and laboratory supplies.

Departmental support

Assisting with the implementation and sustainability of safety measures within the Department.

Liaising with the University’s service departments i.e. maintenance services.

Liaises with external service providers in terms of obtaining quotations and placing of orders.

Responsible for preparing and offering support for practicals / tutorial sessions at undergraduate and honours levels.

Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes

At least an MSc degree in physiological sciences or a related discipline.

Proven relevant post-degree laboratory experience, specifically managing a large tissue culture environment (multiple hoods, multiple incubators, large student cohort).

Proven proficiency in physiological and tissue culture, cell biology and molecular techniques, including experience in:

Cell propagation and freezing;

Cell transfection techniques;

Cell imaging techniques;

Advanced cell culture models, such as organoids, spheroids and primary cell culture techniques

Experience in laboratory workflow and laboratory environment maintenance.

Proven experience in the management and training of postgraduate student cohorts, at Honours, MSc, PhD and post-doctoral fellow level.

Experience in supporting human and / or animal related research programmes.

Excellent computer skills in the use of the Microsoft Office package (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
