The Intern: will assist with the execution of provincial operational strategy in order to manage the provincial electoral office; support towards the coordination and implementation of the electoral projects and programs such as delimitation and registration including by-elections related processes. Assist with the following general administrative duties:

·    Answer telephones, respond to queries of the public, handle routine enquiries and general administrative tasks, compile reports/ minutes, and distribute documents/packages to various stakeholders as directed by the supervisor.

·     Prepare and where required, assist with creating presentations.

OUTREACH INTERNSHIP: WESTERN CAPE

Background

The Electoral Commission is a permanent institution with a specific mandate to manage free and fair elections for legislative bodies in the country. As such the Commission conducts national, provincial and local government elections, including municipal By- Elections.

The purpose of this position is to provide the Intern with experience across the work performed by the Election Commissions and give them exposure to its world of work. While the internship focuses on Outreach, the successful intern may be required perform duties and tasks as it relates to electoral operations and corporate services, and such additional tasks within the scope or performance of an organisational function.

 The Intern reports to the Assistant Manager: Outreach

The key performance areas are:

Civic and Democracy Education: Assist with projects related to the civic and democracy educations and voter registration initiatives across the province, including community outreach engagements. Assist with identification and implementation of outreach activities aimed at youth. Assist with the tasks related to meetings and workshops with stakeholders. Monitoring and collation of reports of engagements, initiatives and activities. 

Communication:  Assist with the drafting and implementation of a provincial Communication Plan, with specific focus on youth. Assist with maintaining an updated database of media in the province.Assist with monitoring media enquiries, and with drafting of media statements and preparations for and the holding of media briefings and interviews.

Research: Assist with and undertake research in electoral processes, situational conditions across the municipalities in the province, socio economic conditions that impact on constitutional democracy in general and electoral processes in particular. Research approaches to civic and democracy education, with emphasis on improved and new ways to engage and encourage youth participation.  Assist in identifying topics for Thought Leadership seminars and submit proposals in regard thereto. To submit written proposals and presentations based on research.

Finance & Administration:  Perform tasks and administrative support as they relate finance documentation and office administration.  The Intern duties will also include performing tasks and providing assistance with the implementation of human resources generalist practices and administrative duties as it relates to permanent staff, temporary as well as electoral staff.

The Electoral Commission is under no obligation to fill the position after advertising it and reserves the right not to make any appointment in the above post.  Although advertised, a position may be withdrawn, re-advertised or filled by way of transfer or deployment, should it be considered in the interest of service delivery.

NB! Applicants must be 35 years of age or below and must not have been an intern or worked in their field of study before to qualify for this programme.  Applicants will be subjected to a risk assessment.

  Please note 

  • Applicants for the above position/s should not have a high party political profile.
  • All successful permanent candidates will be required to enter into performance contracts.
  • Should applicants be in possession of a foreign qualification, it must be accompanied by an evaluation certificate from the South African Qualification Authority (SAQA).

    • updated comprehensive curriculum vitae;
    • a copy of all qualification documents;
    • a copy of identity document; and
    • a copy of driver’s license (if required).
  • Failure to submit the requested documents will result in the application not being considered.
