The ARC seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic person to the following position(s) at Natural Resources and Engineering (ARC-NRE), Arcadia, Pretoria

Job Description
  • Oversee the development of an agricultural greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction plan.
  • Manage stakeholder engagements for the GHG emissions reduction plan.
  • Lead the estimation of GHG emissions in the agricultural sector.
  • Lead climate change mitigation scenario exercises for the agricultural sector.
  • Collect and analyze primary and secondary data.
  • Write reports and scientific articles.
  • Present research results at scientific conferences.
Job Requirements
  • PhD degree in Agrometeorology / Sustainable Agriculture / Environmental Science / Environmental Management.
  • Applicants should be highly motivated graduates with a strong academic background.
  • Strong background in carbon management and greenhouse gas emissions research.
  • Strong skills in science-policy interface.
  • Good communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Willingness to travel to rural farming areas.
  • Valid driver’s licence (code 08/EB).

The ARC- Tropical and Subtropical Crops (ARC-TSC) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic person to the following position in Addo, Eastern Cape.

Job Description
  • Manages projects on breeding and evaluation of tropical and subtropical crops at Addo.
  • Manages daily activities in research blocks in the field with assistance of support staff.
  • Manages project budgets to ensure effective resource allocation (funds and labour) within and across projects.
  • Compiles monthly progress reports (internal) and quarterly reports (external for funders) in the form of written reports and presentations.
  • Identifies research opportunities and implements advanced technologies in breeding.
  • Supervision and management of Research Technicians and Research Support Assistants.
  • Contributes towards technology transfer and training efforts.
  • Liaise with growers, industry technical officers and national and provincial government.
  • Write popular/scientific publications and present research outcomes of relevance to subtropical fruit growers, industries and the scientific community.
Job Requirements
  • MSc. or MTech in Plant Breeding/Genetics/Horticulture/Plant Production with proven ability to manage farm/research blocks in the field.
  • Relevant experience of 8-10 years in an environment with a focus on plant breeding.
  • Knowledge of plant breeding, horticultural production and management of field blocks essential.
  • Basic project and financial management skills.
  • History of collaboration at national level.
  • History of strategic and operational planning skills and expertise.
  • Registration with a scientific and professional body will be an added advantage.
  • Advanced Computer Literacy.
  • Code EB driver’s licence and proven ability to drive.

Job Description

• Compiling quarterly ARC-NRE performance reports for the Senior Manager: Research.
• Coordinating the division’s KPI targets and actual achievements; collating, processing and submitting evidence of outputs per quarter according to the prescribed guidelines.
• Assisting with the compilation of the ARC-NRE business/operational plan.
• Coordinating the division’s inputs for the ARC annual report and providing any other project-related reports required by Management.
• Registering new projects in the Sage X3 ERP system project management module.
• Maintaining project status and project proposal lists/databases.
• Compiling/updating project stage of completion certificates (PCCs) for all externally funded projects.
• Coordinating the submission of quarterly progress reports and PCCs for all Department of Agriculture funded projects, as well as new proposals.
• Filing contracts, reports, invoices and other project documentation.
• Providing administrative support to Management and project leaders, including guidance on the correct project management procedures

Job Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree / Advanced Diploma in Project Management.
• At least 3 years’ experience in project coordination/management.
• Excellent organizational skills, including attention to detail and multitasking ability.
• High degree of integrity and tact to handle sensitive and classified information.
• Good communication skills (written and verbal).
• Ability to work positively with a wide range of individuals involved in different projects.
• Proficiency in the MS Office suite and other programs relevant to project management.
• Understanding the scientific research environment will be an added advantage.
