The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a self-motivated individual to support the Finance Division Project Accounting Unit by providing financial and administration assistance to the various externally funded projects.

This position requires a Grade 12, job specification qualification, or equivalent qualification with NQF 4 with 5 years of work experience in the relevant field, OR a National Diploma, or Advanced Certificate, or equivalent with NQF 6 in financial accounting with 3 years of relevant work experience with same/similar responsibilities in project finance. Higher education qualification /Advanced Diploma at NQF 7 will be an added advantage.

The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: Preparing, analysing and reporting financial information; Has worked with basic budgeting; Working experience in SAGE300 (Accpac) or equivalent accounting system is essential; Willingness to travel nationally when required; Some experience in customer service would be an advantage; Knowledge of Public Finance Management Act, Treasury Regulations, Generally Recognised Accounting Practice Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel; Financial report writing; Project management and Donor funding knowledge.

Key Performance Responsibilities include:

  • Ensure effective financial administration of Projects;
  • Ensure accurate accounting for the projects in SANBI;
  • Ensure accurate financial reporting;
  • Accurate recording keeping of project budgets and accounting systems; and
  • Assist to manage risk.

Foundational Biodiversity Sciences Division

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a self-motivated and meticulous individual to support genetics services, perform validations (DNA barcoding) and ensure compliance with quality management systems.

This position requires a National Diploma in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Forensic Science at NQF level 6 with 4 years of work experience in the relevant field or a Degree/Advanced Diploma or equivalent qualification at NQF level 7 with 2 years of work experience in the relevant field. A postgraduate qualification or equivalent qualification at NQF 8 will be an added advantage.  

The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: training in good laboratory practice and laboratory safety, knowledge of DNA barcoding, molecular analysis processes such as DNA extraction, PCR and cycle sequencing, preferably in  animals and forensics; excellent communication skills (both verbal and written at all levels), analytical skills; ability to work with a diverse team and under pressure whilst being quality and safety conscious; and advanced computer literacy. The possession of a valid driver’s license with at least one-year practical driving experience and a willingness to travel is essential.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE:

  • Implement DNA barcoding protocols and workflows of selected priority vertebrate taxa (Birds, Mammals and Reptiles) for species identification for forensic case work;
  • Contribute to development and implementation of SOPs and technical documents for DNA barcoding including Quality Management System and validation plans;
  • Attend to general laboratory and administrative duties; and
  • Assist in the procurement of laboratory equipment and consumables.
