Purpose of Job
A Maintenance Assistant supports the Maintenance team by providing effective equipment maintenance assistance and reliability while adhering to procedures/codes, to increase stability and maintain sustainability of equipment
Key Accountabilities
- Safety procedures, works instruction, emergency preparedness
- Hand tools (Drill, screw driver, grinder, paint brush, portable tools)
- Use trade related hand tools safely
- Dexterity (Handyman skills)
- Interpret written information Working at heights
- Working in confined spaces
- Identification of lifting tackle
- Inspect lifting tackle pre and after use, and report defects
- Collecting equipment from stores
- Load rigging equipment onto trolley
- Off load rigging equipment on site
- Attach rigging equipment to plant equipment
- Control load by using guide ropes
- Keep people out of barricaded areas, assist in removing rigging equipment from plant equipmentEnsure that housekeeping is always adhered to.
- Load equipment correctly on truck
- Identify the correct securing method and equipment
- Plan appropriate route Identify correct equipment
- Select correct slinging method for simple routine task
- Select correct rigging equipment for simple routine tasks
- Conduct simple, routine rigging tasks
- Remove, transport and install non-complicated valves identified by the foreman
- Remove, transport and install non-complicated pipes and lines identified by the foreman
- Operate pendant controlled overhead cranes
- Perform tasks using a forklift Operate alimak lifts

- Identifies personal training and development needs and incorporates into PDP with foreman approval.
- Support the goals and vision of the business by meeting deadlines.

- Performs plant inspections and repairs as required to ensure equipment reliability.
- Provides adequate feedback to customers on work progress.
- Conducts My IMS/Enablon inspections to maintain and improve plant sustainability.
- INNOVATION AND IMPROVEMENT RESULTS
- Ensures the correct history feedback is captured to improve renewals/upgrades and critical spares are replaced
- Attends and interacts in toolbox talks to improve plant safety.
- Attends and interacts in PDAs and RCAs to improve plant safety and stability.
- Spot continuous improvement opportunities in own work area

Purpose of Job
This Turbine Fitter position will form part of the Centralized Maintenance Function within Sasolburg Operations reporting to the Turbo Group Foreman. This group is responsible for the running plant maintenance and outage inspections on various types of turbo machinery ranging from steam turbines, process gas compressors, vacuum blower and reciprocating compressors ect.
Key Accountabilities
The key responsibilities of this turbine fitter position would be to perform maintenance on all types of high speed rotating equipment. Execution of this maintenance activities is expected to be of an exceptional high standard and due to the criticality and applicable safety requirements including but not limited to;
- Work in accordance with quality plans and work procedures.
- Fault finding on rotating equipment, as well as auxiliary systems (eg, controls systems of a turbine)
- Be conversant with the technical parameters governing rotating equipment maintenance regarding, mechanical seal installation, bearing clearances, gaskets, rotors, couplings, alignment and protection devices.
- Maintenance on all types of high speed rotating equipment.
- Work in accordance with quality plans and work procedures.
- Fault finding on rotating equipment, as well as auxiliary systems (eg, controls systems of a turbine)
- Be conversant with the technical parameters governing rotating equipment maintenance regarding, mechanical seal installation, bearing clearances, gaskets, rotors, couplings, alignment and protection devices.
- Work according to CMMS SAP work orders (or similar)
- Feedback to customer (plant maintenance / production).
- Communicate with customer concerning machine condition, defects as/when required.
Formal Education
- Grade 12 with Maths and Science or N3 with Maths, Science and English – NQF Level 4
- Qualified as an Artisan Fitter NQF4 (MUST)
- Valid Code 8 drivers licence (MUST)
Work Experience
5+ years of experience on maintenance of high speed rotating equipment, after obtaining a NQF4 artisan certification, which should include:

- Steam Turbines
- Centrifugal compressors (barrel & spilt face type)
- Reciprocating compressors
- Centrifugal pumps (single and multi-stage)
- Positive displacement pumps
- Fans
- Blowers
- Gearboxes
- Installation of mechanical seals
- Laser alignment
- Balancing (would be beneficial)
- Fault finding on auxiliary systems
- Knowledge of ISO 18000 safety standards / similar safety systems
- Knowledge of ISO 9001:2008 quality management system
