SENIOR RESEARCH SCIENTIST: ANALYTICAL CHEMIST

The Drug Discovery and Development Centre (H3D) at the University of Cape Town, South Africa is seeking to appoint a Senior Research Scientist. The main purpose of this position is to be part of an interdisciplinary translational research team discovering and developing innovative, lifesaving medicines. Specifically, the incumbent will work with the H3D medicinal and flow chemists in the chemistry laboratory by doing sample preparation, method development, purification and analysis by means of analytical instrumentation, including LCMS and preparative chromatography. Furthermore, the incumbent will ensure that instrumentation in the chemistry laboratories are in good working condition and will perform routine maintenance or alert supervisor about issues.

Requirements:

• A 3-year tertiary qualification with accounting at NQF6 level and 3 years’ relevant work experience, OR Matric with 6 years’

• Ability to take initiative, exercise judgement, solve problems, and work accurately and to deadline with minimal supervision;

As the KTU strengthens its structured knowledge systems and digital capabilities, we are seeking a Data & AI Platform Engineer with a specific focus on building and operating scalable data and AI platforms. This role is ideal for a forward-thinking technologist who is passionate about creating robust infrastructure that enables data-driven insights and intelligent systems to function efficiently at scale.

Role Overview

The Data & AI Platform Engineer will be responsible for building, maintaining, and optimising the organisation’s data and AI infrastructure. In addition to contributing to digital transformation initiatives, the successful candidate will assist in developing reliable platforms that support data processing, analytics, and machine learning operations.
The role sits at the intersection of data engineering, cloud infrastructure, DevOps, and machine learning operations (MLOPS), ensuring that systems are scalable, automated, and production-ready for real-world use.
The successful candidate will work closely with software developers and Knowledge Translation teams to:

• Build and maintain data platforms (warehouses, pipelines)
• Develop and optimise large-scale data processing systems
• Build and support AI/ML platforms for model training and deployment
• Implement CI/CD pipelines for data and AI workflows
• Automate infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (IaC)
• Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimise system performance

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field

Required Skills:

• Proficiency in Python and SQL
• Strong command of data engineering concepts, including ETL/ELT pipelines
• Hands-on experience with cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud
• Practical experience working with big data technologies
• Proficiency in Linux environments and scripting

The group also currently leads the African Bioinformatics Institute (ABI) and is a member of the TREvolution project. We are seeking a Software Engineer to work on the technical implementation and support of Trusted Research Environments (TREs) for several projects that include TREvolution and TRE development and implementation for the African Population Cohorts Consortium (APCC) through the ABI. He/she will also work with data experts and will contribute to development and implementation of GA4GH standards and APIs for federated analysis. The Desmond Tutu HIV Centre (DTHC), based at the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS), is committed to the pursuit of excellence in research, treatment, training, and prevention of HIV and related infections in South Africa. This 1-year contract position will be based at the DTHC Gugulethu Research Offices in Gugulethu, Cape Town. The main purpose of this position is to render efficient and effective clinical care to volunteers on antiretroviral therapy and tuberculosis research studies.
We seek a dynamic individual to join our research team as Medical Officer. We invite applications for a full-time (40 hours per week) one-year fixed term contract medical officer post working across multiple studies within the DTHC Centre for Adherence and Therapeutics (D-CAT). The position is well suited for a doctor who has an interest in working in HIV/TB research.

Requirements for the job:

• MBChB; with active HPCSA registration as an independent practitioner
• Within 3 years of completion of community service
• Demonstrated clinical knowledge, including competence in clinical management of people living with HIV.
• Demonstrated interest in clinical research.
• Detail oriented and capable of completing study documentation legibly and accurately.
• Ability to build interpersonal relationships and use these to manage the study and site structure

• Conduct Clinical Procedures to ensure that participants are managed according to the study protocol, site specific SOPs and
  South African Department of Health guidelines.

  accrual, retention, participant safety, QC rate, adverse/serious adverse event reporting, study procedures completion and
  protocol deviations are met.
• Study Administration as per site and sponsor specific documents (protocol, SOPs, study specific procedures manual) and as
  per GCP guidelines to ensure that study documentation is accurate and complete with the aim of producing reliable and
  credible research data. In addition, complete South African Ethics training requirements.
• Interacting with local health facilities, study auditors, laboratory, etc.
• Maintaining relationships with site stakeholders.
• Management of study staff.
• Contributing to analysis of trial data, with possible abstract and manuscript writing.
