SUCCESSION OPPORTUNITY: ELECTRICAL SUPERVISOR

Job Description

In accordance with the I-14-0039-00 Procedure – Succession Planning, we are inviting INTERNAL applicants who meet the Preferred Requirements to apply.

NOTE that successful application does not guarantee appointment but does allow for development opportunities in preparation for possible consideration.

Main Purpose: To maintain plant and equipment according to standards/procedures and certify electrical installations without harm to employees. 


Key Performance Areas:

Planned Maintenance

  • Maintain mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Develop maintenance plans including check lists for all equipment types.
  • Develop and maintain preventative maintenance schedule for critical equipment.
  • Plan and supervise the installation of temporary and permanent electrical installations.
  • Issue certificate of compliance for all electrical installations.
  • Ensure availability of equipment as requested by the Gear Controller.

Emergency repairs on equipment

  • Assess and prioritise emergency breakdowns.
  • Consult with Plant Maintenance Manager regarding availability and replacement of equipment.
  • Report status of all emergency repairs to Plant Maintenance Manager.

Conduct audits and control

  • Conduct random quality checks on equipment and implement corrective action.
  • Control the quality of repair and maintenance activities to ensure that client expectations are met.
  • Ensure that equipment is tested prior to transfer to site.
  • Ensure latest certification is available on eB.
  • Ensure compliance with the company QMS.
  • Ensure that OEM maintenance specifications are available for maintenance and personnel comply with these specifications.

Administration and cost control

  • Manage spear parts to ensure availability for maintenance.
  • Maintain service and repair records.
  • Comply with procurement procedures.
  • Seek most cost-effective maintenance strategy and plans for maintaining high availability and reliability of equipment.
  • Manage overtime and weekend work effectively.

People management

  • Assign personnel to maintenance and repair work in accordance with their skills and capability.
  • Assess the performance of direct reports quarterly.
  • Provide guidance, training, support and assistance to personnel where necessary.
  • Facilitate grievance and disciplinary procedures.
  • Do succession planning for responsible area.

Safety management

  • Weekly and monthly Supervisors inspections.
  • Daily toolbox talks.
  • Conduct job observations.
  • Task risk assessments.
  • Draw up written safe work procedures.
  • Report on and investigate incidents, unsafe work conditions and acts.
  • Comply to the OHS Act including relevant regulations, SANS standards and other relevant procedures and instructions.
  • Any other job-related duties as required from time to time.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Qualified Artisan (Electrician).
  • Department of Labour accreditation as an Installation Electrician (Wireman’s licence).
  • Master Electrician qualification would have to be obtained during the training period.
  • 5 Years’ supervisor experience with relevant supervisory training.
  • Knowledge of the OHS Act including Regulations and Safety Standards (risk assessments, safe work procedures and housekeeping practices).
  • Computer literate (MS Office).

MECHANICAL FITTER 5 (EE)

Job Description

Main Purpose: To carry out maintenance tasks in accordance with work orders, planned maintenance schedules, verbal instructions, technical drawings, and time constrains, to ensure strict compliance with safety protocols, including lock-out and tag-out procedures when working on machinery, and adherence to work permit requirements for activities involving heights, pressurised equipment, and other hazardous conditions.

Key Performance Areas:

  • Read, understand and ensure work is done from codes and specifications.
  • Adhere to daily target and assignments.
  • Do inspections on all lifting tackle, trolleys, guard rails, stairs, ladder, scaffolding, trestles, hydraulic jacks, machine guards, and keep records of which was sent the HSE department. Lifting tackle inspector qualification and quarterly inspection.
  • Ensure that all tools are in good working condition, i.e. hand tools, portable electrical equipment (grinders, pencil grinders) gas equipment (cutting torch).
  • Secure all portable gas bottle.
  • Assist with annual shutdown maintenance – oil sampling for condition monitoring, thermal scanning of bearing etc.
  • Assist with repair and servicing of machines (cold bending, induction bending, plate/profile rolling machines, lathe, saws, milling machines, pedestal drills, radial arm drills, automated multiple (Pema) and single SAW welding machines, manipulators, rotators, forklifts, tractors, lift trucks and cars/trucks (driven and idlers), drive trains, hydraulic/ pneumatic pumps (piston, vane, gear, etc) hydraulic/pneumatic valves ( relieve, safety, control valves).
  • Assist with repairs and servicing of overhead cranes, gantry cranes, jibs and mobile cranes.
  • Maintain hydraulic system – load sensing and pressure compensation system analysis, troubleshooting and repair. This includes servicing of valves, pumps and sensors.
  • Maintain pneumatic system – load sensing and pressure compensation system analysis, troubleshooting and repair. This includes servicing of valves, pumps and sensors.
  • Maintain tractor system – rollers, chain and belt driven, system troubleshooting and repair, as well as basic vehicle maintenance.
  • Maintain power transfer system – gear system on lathes, milling machines, boring mills, drills etc (machine shop equipment).
  • Diesel mechanic – Internal combustion engines, drive train, braking system etc.
  • Maintain discipline i.e. timekeeping, attendance, and quality of workmanship.
  • Housekeeping to be maintained daily.
  • Ensure adherence to internal control standard (work to work orders).
  • Any other job-related duties as required from time to time.

  • Ability to work in a team.
  • Reliability and self-motivated.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Good and effective communication skills.
  • Fault finding.

Preferred Requirements:

  • N6 in Mechanical fitter would be preferable but N4 would be essential.
  • Qualified Artisan (Diesel Mechanic) – Red Seal.
  • 5 Years’ experience in plant maintenance, especially lifting tackle, ladders, stairways etc.
  • Experience in energised systems (compressors, accumulators and tanks).
  • Experience in using hand and power tools including relevant welding equipment.
  • Knowledge of preventative planned and opportunistic maintenance.
  • Knowledge of reliability centered maintenance (non-essential).
  • Knowledge of using measuring equipment (verniers, callipers, tapes, laser alignment, level gauge, depth gauge micrometer, multimeter etc.).
  • Knowledge of cutting with cutting torch and plasma cutter.
  • Must be able to read, understand and interpret hydraulic, pneumatic and component drawings.
  • OHS Act compliance essential – authorised to declare lifting tackle unsafe use, ensure timeous inspections are done and records maintained as per DMR 18. OHS Act.
  • Understand and adhere to safety protocols – lock out and tag out knowledge (will also be trained internally) when working on machines, work permits for heights, working in ergonomically challenging position.
  • Must be able to work long hours on breakdown.
  • Always ensure the correct use of PPE.

APPRENTICESHIP: BOILERMAKING OR WELDING (EE) – BETHAL

Main Purpose: The Apprenticeship programme is a well-known technical training system, including practical and theoretical components offered in designated trades to achieve artisan status.

Key Performance Areas:

  • The apprenticeship spans over a minimum period of 36 months.
  • The candidates will have to complete the prescribed merSETA modules (Theoretical and Practical) and gain job experience during the period to qualify for a trade test.
  • The candidates will have to pass the applicable trade test to qualify as an Artisan before the end of the apprenticeship period.
  • At the end of the apprenticeship and successful completion of the Trade test the candidate will have a formal qualification equivalent to NQF level 4 as a Qualified Artisan in Boilermaking or Welding.
  • Complete various tasks/assignments as allocated by the Mentor/Training Officer.
  • Provide practical support to production/site as and when required.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Grade 12 with Mathematics (Not Mathematics Literacy) and Physical Science/N2.
  • N2 with subjects relevant to the trades (Mathematics, Engineering Science, Platers Theory and Platers Drawings) would be advantageous.
  • Physically and medically fit.
  • Clear criminal record.
  • 35 years of age or younger.
  • Proof of residence (municipality account).
  • No accommodation or transport will be provided and therefore successful candidates will have to be willing to relocate to Bethal or the surrounding areas if they do not already live locally.
  • Candidates applying for the positions must reside within a 50 km radius of Kriel Power Station in Mpumalanga.
