Mechanical QC Inspector

Job Description

PURPOSE OF ROLE

To ensure that all mechanical works, materials, and processes executed by the organisation and subcontractors comply with applicable codes, standards, specifications, and client requirements. The role focuses on maintaining quality assurance, minimising defects, and promoting continuous improvement across project activities.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

Quality Control & Inspection Management

  • Conduct routine inspections of mechanical works (e.g. welding, piping, fabrication)
  • Verify compliance with approved Quality Control Plans (QCPs) and Inspection Test Plans (ITPs)
  • Monitor hold points and witness points during project execution
  • Record inspection results and maintain accurate quality documentation
  • Identify and report non-conformances and follow up on corrective actions

Subcontractor Quality Oversight

  • Review subcontractor quality documentation for compliance with specifications
  • Monitor subcontractor activities (e.g. welding, NDT, material handling)
  • Ensure repair registers and quality records are updated and accurate
  • Conduct site audits on subcontractor performance
  • Address non-compliant subcontractors and escalate issues where necessary

Documentation & Compliance Control

  • Review and approve technical documentation (QCPs, QA plans, procedures)
  • Ensure all documents meet client, regulatory, and project standards
  • Insert and verify inspection hold and witness points in documentation
  • Maintain records of inspections, audits, and compliance reports
  • Ensure incoming materials meet required specifications and standards

Quality Assurance & Continuous Improvement

  • Monitor Corrective Actions (CA) and Preventive Actions (PA) for effectiveness
  • Identify quality risks and recommend improvement initiatives
  • Conduct internal audits aligned with ISO standards
  • Support implementation of quality management systems
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement on site

Technical Support & Team Development

  • Provide technical guidance on welding procedures and inspection techniques
  • Train and mentor junior inspectors and site personnel
  • Liaise with third-party inspectors on NDT and certification activities
  • Support qualification of welders and preparation of WPQRs
  • Communicate quality requirements and project status to stakeholders

QUALIFICATION

  • Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (minimum)
  • N5 qualification (advantageous)
  • SAIW Level 2 Welding Inspector Certification
  • ISO 9001 Internal / Lead Auditor Certification (preferred)
  • NDT Level 1 or 2 certification (beneficial for career progression)

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in QA/QC within mechanical or welding environments
  • Experience in power plant or heavy industrial projects (advantageous)
  • Experience with subcontractor management and quality control systems
  • Familiarity with welding procedures, WPQRs, and NDT processes

You will be required to perform Fire Risk Assessments, produce Rational Fire Designs and Fire Protection System Design for Greenfields and Brownfields projects within the Industrial, Power Generation and Oil & Gas Industry.

You will be required to produce and oversee quality engineering outputs related to fire suppression and protection systems that satisfy all requirements (Client, Codes, and Standards) by adhering to internal engineering processes. specialist inputs and support to ensure professional and compliant designs are produced on time, within budget, and to specifications. KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

New Business Development, Tenders and Proposals

  • Act as Technical Proposal/Tender Lead for Fire Engineering Related Projects (as appointed by the HOD).

    • Generate Instrument Lists and Specifications
    • Participate in HAZOP, FMECA, LOPA and RAM Studies
  • Review technical outputs from other C&I Engineers.
  • Identify and apply required codes and standards within designs.
  • Identify engineering risks within EPC and EPCM projects.
  • Address internal/external design review comments and obtain AFD and AFC Freeze.
  • Oversee sub-contractor (system integrators) designs to ensure compliance and timely delivery.

Design Integration

  • Interface with other engineering disciplines (Process, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Structural) to ensure integrated design delivery.
  • Participate in Integrated Design Reviews.

Site Engineering, Commissioning and Project Handover

  • Support installation team by resolving technical queries, performing site inspections, and implementing design changes.
  • Support commissioning manager by acting as commissioning engineer, compiling procedures, and recording commissioning data.
  • Support Project Team with handover and close-out of engineering deliverables.
  • Develop as-built documentation and resolve punch lists.
  • Support system/plant performance testing and contribute to lessons learned.

Contract Negotiations

  • Participate in client technical negotiations to reach approval/signature stage when needed.

Technical Guidance and Teamwork

  • Provide guidance to Engineers in Training (EITs) and Junior Engineers/Technologists.
  • Promote and support the Lesedi Values.

QUALIFICATION

  • Sc / B.Eng / B.Tech in Electronic Engineering or Equivalent
  • Registrable or Registered as a Professional Engineer/Technologist

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 4 to 10 years relevant design experience with at least 2 years in the Power Generation / Oil & Gas Industry within an EPC/EPCM environment.

Job Description

PURPOSE OF ROLE

Produce quality technical outputs which satisfy all requirements (Clients, Codes and Standards) by adhering to internal engineering processes. The position is a senior technical role requiring leadership qualities.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • LV and MV Systems Engineering (conceptual & detail design and development of electrical systems and          networks)
  • Design, specification, and execution of electrical systems for industrial plants
  • Design of LV & MV Motor Control Centres
  • Design of LV & MV industrial plant reticulation systems
  • Design of DC plant and battery systems
  • Design of renewable energy systems
  • Design of protection systems
  • Specification of Electrical Switchgear and Motor Protection Equipment
  • Design of cable networks and distribution systems
  • Lighting and small power designs
  • Design of earthing and lightning protection systems
