Michaelhouse invites applications from individuals for the pivotal role of Financial Controller. Reporting to the Financial Director, this key role is responsible for the technical accounting functions of the school, including journals, VAT compliance, financial reporting, and the administration and ongoing development of finance systems and technology.
Commencement date: July 2026
RESPONSIBILITIES (INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO):
• Process all monthly, year-end, and adjusting journals; maintain and reconcile the general ledger and trial balance
• Oversee VAT processing, reconciliation, and monthly SARS submissions; ensure compliance with all relevant tax deadlines
• Prepare and present monthly management accounts and quarterly reports for the Finance Committee
• Manage the annual audit and prepare annual financial statements for the school and associated entities
• Serve as primary systems administrator for Sage Evolution: user access, maintenance, troubleshooting, upgrades, and integration with other platforms (Fraxion, Applicaa, ADAM financial modules, BI tools)
• Ensure accurate and timely creditor payments and debtors’ management
• Oversee bank accounts and cash flow, including international payments and petty cash administration
• Administer financial aspects of school trusts, including donor reporting, S18A tax certificates, and financial statements
• Drive process improvement and automation within the Finance Department; maintain data integrity across all financial systems and train team members on system use
• Support ad hoc financial tasks and administrative functions as needed
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
• A relevant Accounting degree
• Minimum 10 years’ hands-on accounting experience, including financial statement preparation and general ledger management
• Demonstrated hands-on experience with Sage Evolution (or equivalent ERP) as a system administrator, not merely a user; strong proficiency in Excel (including data analysis and pivot tables), Outlook, and Microsoft 365
• Experience with finance-related platforms and BI/reporting tools advantageous (e.g. Fraxion, Applicaa, ADAM)
• SAICA registration not required – professional affiliation (SAIPA, CIMA or equivalent) advantageous
SKILLS & COMPETENCIES:
• Strong financial acumen with attention to detail
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Sound knowledge of VAT legislation, internal financial controls, and accounting standards
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work independently
• Commitment to confidentiality and data integrity
• Technically minded with a strong aptitude for financial systems, data management, and process improvement
• The successful candidate will be required to provide a police clearance certificate, and be cleared on the Sexual Offenders Register.
