Conservation Assistant (Level 2), Walkerbay Complex

Job Description

CapeNature seeks to appoint a dynamic and committed individual to undertake and assist with daily nature conservation operations and eco-tourism operations, including administrative duties and maintenance and repair of infrastructure, equipment and eco-tourism products at the Walker Bay Complex.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

KRA 1 – NATURE CONSERVATION AND INTEGRATED CATCHMENT MANAGEMENT

  • Assist with field tasks related to nature conservation, monitoring and surveillance
  • Assist with integrated annual operations and work plan tasks
  • Assist with the implementation of ecological programmes and monitoring and surveillance, data collection and record keeping
  • Assist with alien invasive plant density verifications and inspections and firebreak assessments and inspections
  • Execute firefighting duties as per standards and protocols
  • Assist with risks, threats and hazards identification and report to management
  • Assist with fauna and flora management on the reserve; indigenous, invasive and exotic
  • Assist with the ecological restoration of degraded areas
  • Perform stand-by duties as per duty rosters and respond timeously to call outs and incident response

KRA 2 – ECO-TOURISM, ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND AWARENESS

  • Provide visitors with information regarding the nature reserve, fauna, flora and conditions for access to the nature reserve
  • Assist with gate guard duties when gate guards are on training or engaged with other duties as assigned by management
  • Monitor and manage visitor behaviour and report incidents
  • Ensure CapeNature’s customer care principles are maintained and implemented
  • Assist with guest check-in and check-out procedures
  • Assist with search and rescue operations in keeping with protocols and procedures
  • Assist stakeholder engagement officers and field rangers with the implementation of environmental education and awareness programmes
  • Perform Environment Control Officer (ECO) duties for film / photo shoots and events

KRA 3 – MAINTENANCE OF INFRASTRUCTURE AND EQUIPMENT

  • Ensure the terrain is clean, neat and tidy at all times
  • Undertake and/or assist with structure protection of office and eco-tourism nodes
  • Manage stores and associated assets
  • Identify maintenance needs and assist with the development of maintenance and repairs schedules:
    • Office buildings and stores, accommodation units, camping and picnic areas, ablutions and pools
    • Roads, trails, walkways and boardwalks
    • Fences, gates, booms and access management structures, and other infrastructure, e.g. water reticulation systems, boreholes pumps, sewer systems
    • Tools and equipment
    • Vehicles
    • Gardens and terrain
    • Signage (for operational and visitor information purposes)
  • Implement the maintenance schedule as prescribed

KRA 4 – OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY (OHS), ADMINISTRATION AND HUMAN RESOURCES

  • Participate in OHS assessments and OHS toolbox talks and provide input for Hazard Identification and Risk Assessments (HIRA)
  • Ensure compliance with OHS procedures and standards
  • Assist with identification and mitigation of risks and threats in the work environment.
  • Assist with obtaining quotes for purchases related to duties.
  • Assist with administrative duties as and when required and adhere to CapeNature protocols and procedures
  • Assist with the preparation of fire logs and reports as and when required
  • From time to time, assist with supervision of contract staff and students
  • As and when required, assist with training of contract staff and students
  • Participate in meetings as required by management
  • Undertake transport duties

KRA 5 – LAW ENFORCEMENT AND COMPLIANCE MONITORING

  • Assist with patrols as per compliance plans and duty roster
  • Report instances of unauthorised activities and/or non-compliance with access permit conditions
  • Undertake permit checks and inspections at entrance points and within the Nature Reserve
  • Participate in law enforcement operations and the manning of observation points
  • Assist in the response to incidents of non-compliance / unauthorised activities

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Qualifications and Experience

  • Grade 12
  • At least two years of practical experience in a technical / maintenance field.
  • A valid code B driver’s license and at least five years of driving experience.
  • Computer literacy (MS Word, MS Excel and Internet)
  • No criminal record

COMPETENCIES:

  • Knowledge of nature-based tourism and nature conservation
  • Willingness to work irregular hours and after hours such as on weekends and public holidays and perform standby duties as per duty roster.
  • Physical fitness and ability to spend long hours outdoors often under strenuous conditions, undertake foot and vehicular/vessel patrols, search and rescue, firefighting and alien invasive species clearing operations.
  • Ability to repair and maintain equipment and infrastructure (e.g building maintenance, plumbing, carpentry maintenance and equipment repairs)

Finance Officer – Procurement (Level 5)

Job Description

We have an opportunity for a Procurement Officer: Supply Chain Management to join our Finance team. The procurement officer is responsible for administrative support to the centralized Acquisition Management processes within the organization. These include database administration, vendor registration, and systems administration support.

This role requires administrative functions within supply chain management to promote efficiency, cost-effectiveness, quality management, and organizational support.

REQUIREMENTS:

Qualifications and Experience

  • Knowledge of SCM legislation and frameworks (PFMA, Treasury Regulations, PPPFA, B-BBEE).

IT Support Technician (Level 8), Cape Town Office

Job Description

CapeNature is looking for an enthusiastic and dependable IT Support Technician to join our ICT team at the Cape Town Office, Bridgetown. Reporting to the Manager: ICT, this role is ideal for someone who enjoys supporting people through more complex technical challenges, solving problems, and ensuring technology works reliably for everyone. You will play a meaningful role in providing advanced support to colleagues across the Cape Town office, regional offices, and remote conservation reserves, helping them stay connected, productive, and supported in a modern hybrid working environment.

Purpose of the role

The IT Support Technician provides second line technical support, server administration, cloud service management, and infrastructure maintenance across the Entity.

The role ensures stable operations across geographically dispersed environments, handling escalated incidents, hardware and software management, endpoint security, project delivery, and collaboration with multiple third-party service providers.

Key Responsibilities

KRA: 1 Core Technical Support (2nd Line), Projects, User Support & Continuous Improvement

  • Provide second-line support for escalated incidents from the Service Desk.
  • Plan and execute IT infrastructure upgrades, system migrations, and improvement initiatives.
  • Coordinate and manage third‑party vendors for connectivity, hardware repairs, infrastructure services, and SLA adherence.
  • Deliver advanced remote and onsite troubleshooting, guiding end‑users through diagnostics and fixes.
  • Ensure timely resolution of desktop, server, network, connectivity, and telephony incidents, including escalation handling.
  • Coordinate on site visits for work that cannot be completed remotely.
  • Administer full IT asset compliance, including inventory, tagging, licensing, lifecycle refresh, and disposal.
  • Install, configure, test, repair, and replace hardware and software components as required.
  • Troubleshoot complex issues across hardware, operating systems, networking, printing, authentication, and applications.
  • Document all IT processes, SOPs, network diagrams, system configurations, and project changes.
  • Collaborate with ICT Management to modernize and uplift CapeNature’s technology landscape and operational maturity.
  • Share technical knowledge and provide mentoring for 1st line staff.

KRA: 2 Cloud & Modern Workplace Support

  • Assist with provisioning laptops and peripherals for hybrid users, ensuring device encryption (BitLocker) and Intune compliance.
  • Support Intune deployments, policies, device enrolment, and modern management.
  • Provide onboarding for hybrid users on tools, policies, and self-service procedures.
  • Configure, and deploy Microsoft 365 applications.
  • Deploy desktop solutions and assist with project related software installations.
  • Troubleshoot cloud service interruptions and optimize cloud services for remote environments.

KRA: 3 Server & Core Infrastructure Support

  • Support and maintain Windows Server infrastructure, including Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, file/print services, and related roles.
  • Conduct server patching, updates, backup verification, preventative maintenance, and scheduled failover testing.
  • Ensure maximum up time of server and network services across the organization.
  • Handle escalations related to data center operations or mission critical systems.
  • Support infrastructure used in remote conservation reserves.

KRA: 4 Network, Endpoint and Security Responsibilities

  • Support network related issues for VPNs, routers, switches, and Wi Fi access points.
  • Ensure strong endpoint security through antivirus and vulnerability management.
  • Implement and maintain access control to enforce least privilege and secure authentication.
  • Contribute to CapeNature’s policy development; ensure staff follow approved security procedures.

KRA: 5 Security, Compliance & POPIA

  • Oversee user data responsibly in line with POPIA and company policies.
  • Promote cyber hygiene with hybrid users (phishing, device security, password policies).
  • Ensure remote users follow secure access protocols.

 
Minimum Requirements (mandatory)

  • Matric (Grade 12)
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in IT Support role.
  • NQF Level 5 IT Diploma (Technical Support, IT Systems, Information Technology or similar).
  • Strong understanding of Windows Server, AD management, DNS, GPO, DHCP.
  • Experience supporting Windows and Android, including hardware diagnostics and software deployment.
  • Good knowledge of networking fundamentals and secure remote access (VPN).
  • Excellent communication and customer interaction skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across IT teams and external vendors.
  • Effective communication skills, able to guide users remotely.
  • Reliable home connectivity for remote workdays.
  • Ability to travel to remote locations; must hold a valid South African Code 8 driver’s license.

Landscape Unit Manager (Level 11) – Cederberg Landscape Unit – Porterville Office

Job Description

CapeNature seeks to appoint an energetic, dynamic, professional candidate to join a team of landscape unit managers in the Conservation Operations Directorate’s West Landscape. The ideal candidate should have exceptional interpersonal and communication skills coupled with the ability to analyse complex issues, identify potential solutions, and implement effective strategies and ensure operations are successfully executed.

CapeNature practices a landscape approach to nature conservation in the Western Cape Province whereby protected areas are integrated into the landscape. Community outreach, education and awareness; and stakeholder engagement are multi-sectoral and contribute to positive conservation outcomes. Landscape Unit Managers ensure that protected areas are effectively managed and enable beneficial access to protected areas and their natural, cultural and historic assets. Landscape Unit Managers mitigate risk and practice good governance and ensure that wildlife regulation mitigates risk to biodiversity and promotes voluntary compliance.

The successful candidate will provide leadership, oversight and operations management of the Ceder-Berg Landscape Unit inclusive of the Cederberg Complex (Cederberg, Kliphuis, MatjiesRivier and Hexberg), Groot Winterhoek, Sandveldt Coastal Complex (Bird Island, Verlorenvlei, Rocherpan Nature Reserve, Rocherpan MPA) and Bergriver RAMSAR site. The successful candidate will report to the Landscape Manager: West.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Enhance biodiversity resilience through targeted ecosystem conservation and restoration initiatives

  • Targeted conservation and restoration initiatives and interventions informed by knowledge and management best practice are implemented.
  • Protected areas are managed according to a management plan and prioritized action plans.
  • Priority landscapes are protected, restored and conserved.
  • Conservation operations are optimised through planned actions and interventions towards effective management, plans informed by management effectiveness assessments (using the METT), among others.
  • Priority ecological infrastructure areas are restored and protected.

Lead and manage landscape conservation and stewardship in ways that address biodiversity loss.

  • Biodiversity legal mandate is implemented through compliance and enforcement actions.
  • Protected area expansion planning and associated conservation intelligence priorities are implemented.
  • Actions to improve the conservation status of priority species and ecosystems are implemented.
  • Functional partnerships addressing biodiversity loss are developed and maintained.
  • Landscape ecological and human well-being is promoted through a landscape environmental interpretation and awareness plan.

Promote the biodiversity economy, and enhance biodiversity access and sustainable use

  • Job opportunities are created through implementation of environmental programmes such as the Expanded Public Works Programme.
  • Contractor development and work opportunities are enhanced through environmental programmes implemented (Integrated Catchment Management, Expanded Public Works).
  • Sustainable harvesting of natural products is facilitated, where permitted.
  • Biodiversity economy activities are implemented in identified nodes.
  • Livelihood support is established for local communities.

Lead and manage conservation action in the Landscape Unit to advocate for behavioral change and promote voluntary compliance.

  • Local community involvement in protected area management is established.
  • Stakeholder engagement is enhanced through targeted interventions.
  • Public Private Partnerships are maintained.
  • Compliance plans for all On and Off Reserve components are in place and implemented.
  • Biodiversity permits are issued within legislated time frames.

Assume overall accountability for ensuring performance, governance and risk management

  • An enabling environment is created for formal partnerships to mitigate risks to biodiversity.
  • Management structures are in place and infrastructure is fit for purpose.
  • All relevant Occupational Health and Safety legislation, policies and standards are in place and adhered to.
  • Landscape governance is enhanced by adherence to corporate policies and standards.
  • Landscape performance is enhanced through effective and efficient staff performance.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A Bachelors’ Degree or equivalent NQF Level 7 qualification within the field of Nature/Environmental Conservation and/or Management, a post-graduate qualification would be advantageous.
  • 3-5 Years’ management experience in the field of Nature Conservation, Environmental Management, Disaster Management and/or related discipline.
  • Demonstrable training, skills and/or relevant experience in project management.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in at least two of the official Western Cape languages at all levels, both verbally and in writing.
  • No criminal record.
  • In possession of a valid Code B (unendorsed) driver’s license with own vehicle and willingness to travel regularly and extensively.
  • ICS 100 and 200.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree in Natural Sciences and/or Environmental Management will be advantageous.
  • Experience in world heritage site management and disaster/incident preparedness /response/management.
  • Knowledge and experience of applicable conservation and other legislation, including human resource management, labour relations and occupational health and safety, and the implementation thereof.
  • Proficient in GIS Software Package/s (e.g., QGIS).
  • Demonstrable strong leadership skills, strategic vision and a demonstrated ability to lead a team at Senior Management level.
  • Demonstrable experience with human capital management, capacity building, and financial, procurement and asset management.
  • Good knowledge of the functioning of ecological processes, conservation and natural resource management, and a proven track record of managing protected and/or conserved areas at landscape level.
  • Good computer literacy, electronic communication competency and a good working knowledge of the MS Office suite of software.
  • Excellent organisational skills, as well as analytical, conceptual and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work in stressful situations, regularly work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Physical fitness to perform duties and inspections in field.
  • Competency in conflict management.
  • Understanding of environmental legislation.
