West Wits Mining is seeking an experienced and motivated Rock Engineer to join our Mine Technical Services (MTS) Department. This is an exciting opportunity to play a critical role in ensuring the safe, efficient and legally compliant design and management of underground mining operations.
Reporting to the MTS Manager and General Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for fulfilling all legal responsibilities associated with Regulation 14.1(8), read with Section 7(2) of the Mine Health and Safety Act (Act 29 of 1996), while providing rock engineering expertise that supports the safe extraction of mineral resources and achievement of operational objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with all rock engineering legal requirements in terms of the Mine Health and Safety Act.
- Develop, implement, and maintain fit-for-purpose rock engineering and strata-control designs.
- Provide technical input into mine planning, design and production activities.
- Support and maintain the functionality of the West Wits Mineral Resource Management (MRM) framework.
- Participate actively in mine planning and operational meetings.
- Conduct workplace inspections and management audits in line with company requirements.
- Review and sign off on the relevant survey and mining documentation.
- Monitor and evaluate ground conditions to ensure safe mining practices.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to Geotechnical Observers and relevant technical personnel.
- Stay abreast of industry developments, technological advancements and legislative changes relating to rock engineering.
- Protect and manage the company’s intellectual property and confidential technical information.
- Build and maintain professional relationships with industry peers, consultants and stakeholders.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
Government Certificate of Competency (GCC) in Rock Engineering for Underground Tabular and Metalliferous Mines.
Experience
Minimum of 6 years’ experience in rock engineering, strata control and mine design within an underground mining environment.
Skills and Competencies

- Sound knowledge of rock engineering design principles and statutory requirements.
