The DSTI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Food Security (CoE-FS) is a national research initiative hosted by the University of the Western Cape (UWC) and co-hosted by the University of Pretoria (UP). Funded by the Department of Science Technology and Innovation (DSTI) and the National Research Foundation (NRF), the Centre conducts cutting-edge research on food security, nutrition, and food systems resilience in South Africa and beyond.
CoE-FS plays a critical role in policy development, capacity building, and knowledge dissemination by engaging with government, industry, and civil society. Its research focuses on food access, governance, and sustainability, aiming to improve food security outcomes in the region. The Centre also trains Master’s, PhD, and postdoctoral researchers, strengthening South Africa’s expertise in food security research. UKUDLA is an African-German research collaboration focused on food systems resilience and agricultural data science. It is led by the University of Hohenheim (Germany), the University of the Western Cape (South Africa), and the University of Pretoria (South Africa), with additional partners across Africa. Funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), UKUDLA aims to enhance food system sustainability through interdisciplinary research, training, and international knowledge exchange.
UKUDLA provides structured PhD, postdoctoral, and research fellowships, supporting scholars across South Africa, Germany, and Malawi. It emphasizes transdisciplinary approaches, combining agriculture, data science, and policy research to strengthen food security in Africa. Both CoE-FS and UKUDLA focus on food security and sustainable food systems, with CoE-FS leading South Africa’s national research efforts, while UKUDLA enhances international collaboration and capacity building. Together, they contribute to evidence-based policy, interdisciplinary research, and the development of future leaders in food security and agricultural sciences. As the CoE-FS grows, it is expected that these multi-institutional, multi-year projects will be supplemented by new initiatives resulting from successful grant-raising.
The Coordinator: Operations and Administration for the DSTI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Food Security (CoE-FS) and UKUDLA is responsible for the coordination and implementation of all operational and administrative project activities, stakeholder engagement, and oversight of operational and administrative processes and administrative staff of both research initiatives, and future large projects undertaken by the CoE-FS. This role ensures that the two programs align efficiently, avoiding duplication of efforts while maximising research impact, capacity-building, and financial sustainability.
Reporting to the Project Manager: DSTI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Food Security, the successful applicant will be responsible for:
- The overall office operational support and workplan coordination, including overseeing the management of administrative assistants, coordination support to the undergraduate and postgraduate recruitment, transition and academic programs to ensure successful implementation.
- The coordination of stakeholder engagement and event logistics, coordination of the day-to-day operations, working closely with the finance coordinator logistics are executed according to the approved budgets.
- The coordination of the academic program support to various projects.
- Reporting and monitoring, assisting with preparation of technical and institutional reports, maintaining monitoring tools for project outputs and outcomes, guidance to support staff when preparing technical and online reports.
- Operational and administrative support to director/s, project manager, project teams and core CoE-FS team, respond to operational and research queries from funders, auditors, project leaders and institutional units.
- The governance and compliance with the funding agency’s terms, conditions and requirements.
- Support the effective marketing and communication of the research and operational activities.
- Liaising with senior and middle management internally and key external agencies, including the funding body and implementing partners.

The UWC CoLab for e-Inclusion and Social Innovation, located in the Institutional Planning unit, plays a thought leadership role in terms of an increasingly digitized society. The CoLab forms part of national network of 8 universities in collaboration with national government and industry partners to contribute towards the national digital skills agenda, focusing on practical interventions, research and advocacy.
The CoLab is responsible for the Future Innovation Lab (FIL), a multi-year Employment Equity Investment collaborative program between the University of the Western Cape and Samsung, aimed at providing disadvantages youth to develop in-demand software development skills in view of creating opportunities for them in the market. The activities and deliverable of the FIL programme is performed by the CoLab staff members and has a dedicated programme manager. As a social innovation initiative, it reports into the DVC: Research and Innovation.
The CoLab seeks to appoint a highly motivated and compassionate Student Support Coordinator to join the core team. Coordinator: Student Support will be responsible for coordinating an integrated approach towards student support throughout the 10-month period of the FIL-program for 70% of his/her time while 30% will be allocated to other CoLab initiatives. All the work needs to be done in close collaboration with CoLab stakeholders including industry and government partners, community-based organisations and relevant internal UWC role-players. This role requires learning and development expertise, excellent interpersonal skills, a good understanding of the requirements of the business environment, the challenges faced by previously disadvantaged students as well as the UWC financial and administrative policies and procedures. The coordinator will be responsible for the fostering of a supportive and inclusive but efficient learning environment.
The successful applicant will be responsible for:
- Serve as the primary point of contact for students, offering guidance and support throughout their participation in the software development programme.
- Coordinate the student recruitment and registration process, including disbursements of stipends.
- Coordinate an integrated student support program for students for the 10-month period of the FIL program, in collaboration with team members, industry providers and UWC and other service providers.

The Information & Communication Services (ICS) Department at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) delivers a broad range of best practice Information & Communication Technology services to one of South Africa’s most dynamic universities. The ICS department has identified a growth area within the IT Operations and Services unit that focus on delivering services aligned to the University Digital Transformation strategy and as part of the Institutional Operating Plan (IOP). In order to deliver on the Department’s strategic initiatives, an opportunity exists for a suitably qualified candidate: Systems Administrator: IT Operations.
The Key Responsibilities of the incumbent include but are not limited to:
- Responsible for production and daily operations support,
- Evaluate all aspects of server performance relating to systems utilisation, availability and reliability,
- Ensure data recovery, maintenance, data integrity and space requirements are met across a variety of platforms,
- Ensure performance, reliability and availability of platforms in datacentre to meet business objectives,
- Maintain security of IT infrastructure,
- Maintain infrastructure documentation, standard operating procedures and inventory of datacentre,
- Provide input and recommendations regarding business continuance issues and improvements to the operations of systems and processes supported,
- Setup and use monitoring and diagnostics tools effectively to troubleshoot issues on systems,
- Experiential exposure to best practice frameworks, change control, opensource technologies including ITIL processes,
- Contribute to development of procedures and processes for enterprise Datacentre operations,
- Contribute to developing technology standards and best practices for the Datacentre Infrastructure,
- Analyse technologies and market trends, determining potential impact upon the enterprise and recommend solutions to address risks,
- Work closely with the network infrastructure team, application support team, departments and other stakeholders.
Minimum Requirements
- A NQF 7 (or higher) with three (3) years experience in a datacentre environment
Or
- Senior certificate (with Bachelors pass) and relevant accredited (industry-recognised) professional certifications (e.g. MCSE, MSCA Certified DevOps Engineer, etc) with demonstrated five years’ experience in a datacentre environment at a large organisation or educational institution.
Skills and Experience
Strong knowledge or understanding in these key areas would be advantageous:
- Microsoft Server Technologies: MS Server, MS Clustering, Active Directory Services, Group Policy, Windows Remote Desktop
- Virtualisation technologies: VMware ESX Server, Hyper-V, KVM, etc
- Microsoft Azure, Office 365, Entra ID
Minimum competencies required:
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills,
- Ability to work across interdisciplinary teams,
- Ability to analyse and resolve problems swiftly using a range of diagnostic tools and techniques,
- Ability to adapt to new technologies, best practice frameworks in the datacentre environment,
- Understanding of the cyberthreat landscape and ability to mitigate these threats,
- Ability to create and maintain technical documentation, policies and processes as related to the datacentre infrastructure environment.

Role Clarification & Key Performance Areas
The university seeks to employ a skilled, knowledgeable and resourceful individual to provide services as a General Assistant: Stores in respect to its various departments at Infrastructure and Engineering -Technical Stores.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Accurate record-keeping, stock issuing and capturing of stock on the Maintenance System
- Performing counts, annually, daily and spot checks on stock items to ensure sufficient inventory levels
- Reporting and Assisting the Senior Stores Buyer with the overall maintenance of the stock and storage areas..
- General maintenance functions rely heavily on the availability of Technical spares and consumables, therefore it is critical to efficiently source and control parts and spares.
- Accurately pick orders based on system-generated stock requisitions
- Do daily stock counts on stock items inventory, deliveries ,packing and storing of spares
- Maintain sufficient stock inventory and report low stock levels to Senior Stores Buyer daily to prevent stock outs
- General assistance by properly pack and unpack items for storage on shelves and storage containers
- Receive and count stock items, ensuring accurate data recording as per purchase orders placed on delivery
- Assist with stock counts.
- Store items in a neat, organized, and easily accessible manner in designated or storage areas as per the guidelines of the Technical Stores
- Correctly label stock items with appropriate markings as per specification by Senior Stores Buyer
- Clean and maintain supplies, tools, equipment, and storage areas to ensure compliance with OHSACT regulations.
- Inspect all stock items for signs of wear or defects and report any damages to the Senior Stores Buyer
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12
- 3-5 years of proven experience in a Stores environment
- Computer literacy
- A valid driver’s license (code EB) with 2 years of driving experience
Knowledge, skills and capabilities
- Good planning and organising
- Good knowledge of Technical and Engineering practices
- Good knowledge of compliance regulations
- Good knowledge of occupational health and safety
- Good communication verbal and written
- Ability to work under pressure
- Good analytical thinking , Logical and methodical skills

- Good interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written)
- Technical Ability and knowledge
- Preference will be given to candidates with a Technical and Engineering background
