The OHSE Division within P&S is seeking an Occupational Health Nurse.

The main purpose of this position is to provide clinical services and support functions within the OH Unit.

•  Liaise with statutory bodies and management to address occupational health governance and compliance.

•  Planning, coordinating and implementing of the medical surveillance programme for staff at pre-employment,     baseline, pre-placement, periodic, and exit of employment at UCT.

•  Mediate and initiate interventions to uphold occupational health standards and best practices.

•  Network with faculties and departments to optimize the service delivery of the OHSE Division.

•  Advise and support OHSE Division managers in the investigation of occupational health-related incidents.

•  Subject matter advisor to inter-departmental managers on institutional occupational health protocols.

The role reports to the Occupational Health Unit (OHU) Manager within the Occupational Health Safety and Environment (OHSE) Division and provides expert advice on matters impacting occupational health in consultation with various related subject matter experts.

Requirements for the Job:

  • NQF – 8 Registered Nurse with postgraduate qualification in Occupational Health
  • Must have at least 5 years’ experience as an Occupational Health Practitioner in an Occupational Health setting.
  • Experience in administrative facilitation of reporting of Occupational Injuries and Occupational Diseases.
  • Member of a nursing professional body such as the South African Nursing Council.

Advantageous

  • Experience in a Higher Education or complex environment
  • Member of the South African Society of Occupational Health Nurse Practitioners (SASOHN)

Responsibilities of this position will include:

  • Engage directly with employees and line management regarding clarity on the occurrence of work-related incidents in the workplace and accurate details for submission to the service provider responsible for submission of claims to the Department of Employment and Labour (DOEL).
  • Report and discuss any individual or personal health risk or vulnerability of employees (willing to disclose such information) with medical practitioners, Organizational Health, and OHU Manager without breaching patient confidentiality.
  • Provide the Governance Monitoring Risk and Compliance (GMRC) Manager with information related to COIDA to enable the compilation of statistical trends and analysis on incident management.
  • Provide subject matter guidance on institutional occupational health matters.
  • Planning, coordinating, and implementing the medical surveillance programme for staff at pre-employment, baseline, pre-placement, periodic, and exit of employment at UCT.
  • Meet all compliance requirements of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and all the Regulations, COID Act, Hazardous Substances Act, Nursing Act DOH Directives, and Nursing Council directives in all practices and operations within the OHU Clinic

The potential candidate must pass a pre-employment medical which is aligned to the job functions before being nominated for employment.

The annual cost of employment, including benefits is between R 580,137.00 and  R 682,513.00.

We invite applications from suitably qualified and experienced persons for this permanent position in the Properties and Services Department, for appointment as soon as possible.

We are seeking to appoint a responsible, energetic person who is highly motivated and who can use their initiative. Reporting to the Director: Programme Management, the successful incumbent will be responsible for the planning and execution of building works on Campus.

Requirements for the post:

  • A NQF 7 degree in the built environment defined in this instance as Engineering (All Services), Quantity Surveyors, Architecture and Construction Management)
  • A post Degree/Diploma/Accreditation qualification in Project Management from a recognized governing body.
  • At least 10 (Ten) years relevant project planning and management experience in the Construction & Project Management environment of which at least 5 years should be the project Lead This experience must include working for a contractor, with hands-on experience managing effective project delivery at construction sites.
  • Experience to include multi-year projects of scale, complexity, and high value.
  • A working knowledge and understanding of the various types of construction contracts and the ability to apply them.
  • A working knowledge of the building industry and the ability to read, interpret and provide input architectural & construction drawings.
  • Prior experience in the built environment.
  • This position entails inspecting progress at construction or project sites and will require the incumbent to be medically fit.
  • A valid code EB Driver’s License.
  • Alertness and the ability to think quickly in an emergency.
  • A friendly disposition coupled with sound interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).
  • A strong sense of customer service.
  • Proven computer literacy with proficiency in MS Excel and Outlook at an intermediate level.
  • The ability to multi-task, work in a team or on an individual basis with minimum supervision.
  • The flexibility to work according to the Capital Planning and Projects Departments operational hours.
  • The ability to cope in a highly stressful environment.
  • Possess a high level of honesty and integrity in handling cash and finances.
  • Must have experience in integration of OHSE principles and standards within projects and conformance to respective statutory acts and regulations.

Advantageous:

  • Prior experience in the tertiary education-built environment.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD and MS Projects.

 Responsibilities:

  • To plan and manage the implementation of building projects in compliance with RSA legislation in particular National Building Regulations and OHS Act.
  • To manage, monitor and report on projects costs for budgeting purposes.
  • To monitor and manage the projects’ timeline ensuring completion on time.
  • Keep accurate analysis and record of project related expenditure.
  • Implement relevant procurement policies and follow due process.
  • Produce detailed expenditure reports and evaluation of the project team members.
  • Manage the outputs of the project team.
  • To ensure that you integrate services into your project management planning and work collaboratively with other disciplines on P&S.
  • Be prepared to manage adhoc unplanned events.

The annual remuneration package for 2023, including benefits, is between R711 889 and R837 514.

Bioinformatician

The University of Cape Town HIV Diversity and Pathogenesis Group is looking for a motivated, suitably qualified person for the position of bioinformatician.  This is an opportunity to be part of an exciting HIV research team evaluating host-virus interaction, HIV pathogenesis and HIV vaccine breakthrough infections, as well as studies to investigate emerging viruses such as SARS-CoV-2.

Requirements:

  • BSc Hons degree with 3 years experience relevant to the job; or Masters degree with 1 years experience relevant to the job
  • Experience with scripting or coding
  • Experience in Unix-based computing environments
  • Experience working with pathogen genomic sequence data
  • Good organizational skills, ability to deliver timeously on deadlines, and excellent attention to detail
  • Good communication and written skills
  • Ability to work in a team

Advantageous:

  • Knowledge of version control (git) and relational databases
  • Experience with software development
  • Experience working with viral and HIV related sequence data
  • Experience with workflows for second and third generation sequencing of viral templates
  • Experience with Galaxy, NextFlow, Django, genome sequence assembly, phylogenetic analysis, structural biology
  • Proven flexibility in applying Bioinformatics across a broad range of application areas
  • Experience using co-pilot or large language model assisted coding

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide support to scientists and students in the management and analysis of their data
  • Development and implement analysis workflows for processing next generation HIV sequencing data
  • Manage and analyze next generation sequence data, including QC activities.
  • Maintenance and support the laboratory information management system
  • Providing bioinformatics training to staff and students
  • Write project reports and SOPs
  • Contribution to publication of results
  • Responsible for data management, software maintenance, liaising with University IT department, and server admin

Chief Investigator

The Holistic Drug Discovery and Development Centre (H3D) is an interdisciplinary, soft-funded research unit at the University of Cape Town engaged in the discovery of preclinical drug candidates for treating malaria, tuberculosis (TB), and drug-resistant infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria. H3D is seeking to appoint a Chief of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Biology with expertise in TB and/or other infectious diseases caused by ESKAPE pathogens on a 5-year contract, starting on 1 July 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position will head the H3D bacteriology teams, providing mentorship to the TB and AMR biologists and interact with the multidisciplinary teams to drive the drug discovery programs.  This position will report to the Head of Drug Discovery and be part of the Leadership Team responsible for the H3D’s overall scientific strategy.

Requirements:

  • Completion of a PhD in a relevant field or clinician scientist with equivalent qualification
  • >10 years of industrial or academic experience working in TB and/or AMR bacteriology
  • 6-10 years of industrial or academic experience in leading biology efforts on drug discovery programs, preferably in TB and/or other infectious diseases caused by ESKAPE pathogens.
  • A strong track record of relevant publications with the lead authorship in high-impact journals
  • Up to date on laboratory technologies and strong bench experience in microbiology and molecular biology

Advantages:

  • Experience in leading a multidisciplinary drug discovery team.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to following:

  • Oversee and lead all biology efforts in TB and AMR, including screening, target identification, and validation, assay development, development of disease models, etc
  • Lead scientific teams to generate novel and innovative scientific and technical approaches to support and drive drug discovery.
  • Participate and lead interdisciplinary drug discovery team discussions and assist in decision-making.
  • Collaborate with and influence operations of project stakeholders, partners, and contract research organizations. 
  • As part of the Senior Leadership Team, establish goals and set priorities for research; create and facilitate opportunities for external collaboration and for funding.  

The annual remuneration package, including benefits is between R 961 360 and R 1 131 011.
