The ARC-Plant Health and Protection seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic person
to the following position at Vredenburg Campus: Stellenbosch
RESEARCH SUPPORT ASSISTANT
Salary (R107 288 – R160 132 p.a.) all-inclusive remuneration package
Key Performance Areas:
Assist with preparation of growth media for glasshouse trials according to protocol. Adherence to
mixing ratios while preparing the growth media,
Assist with preparation of consumables needed to conduct glasshouse trials. These include planting
sticks, clean planting pots, sterilized beakers,
Assist with execution and evaluation of glasshouse trials and field trials,
Assist with preparation of inoculum for trials (shake and autoclave inoculum bottles regularly,
destroy used inoculum accordingly),
Assist with processing of plant samples under supervision of the research assistant,
Assist with maintaining glasshouse trials by watering and pest control under supervision,
Assist with plant care and maintenance of potted carnation plants. Assist with preparation of new
cuttings and harvesting and drying of carnation leaves,
Provides support with organising and hosting of scientific events (Cleaning up for events),
Assist with stock control and inventory management of research consumables (Monitoring and
packing of consumables for research, as requested),
Provides verbal feedback (monthly) and adhere to quality standards (destroys fungal material, used
soil from trials),
Maintenance and correct use of research equipment (soil pasteurizer, autoclaves, water baths,
cooler boxes),
Assist with upkeep of glasshouses, soil preparation room and washing basin. Fumigation of
laboratories.
Requirements:
Grade 10,
Prior experience will be an added advantage,
Great learning capability,
Ability to work in a team,
Shows good understanding of what the job requires (take accountability and responsibility),
Has competence, confidence and trustworthy.
