Venetia Mine is South Africa’s most valuable diamond mine. As we develop the mine underground, it is also one of the largest infrastructure projects in the country. Venetia Underground Project (VUP) is a complexed underground mechanised development, shaft and mine construction project to deliver an operational Sub Level Cave mine operation. Experienced and effective management and control of the project works and mining operations through major contractors (EPC, Mining Contractor) and owner functions is essential for Safe, timely and effective delivery of the project.

Job Description:

Senior Foreman Batch Plant

Your responsibilities will include but not limited to:

  • Mine Health and Safety Act/Occupational Health and Safety Act, Site specific Induction and Legal responsibilities (Required 292 Appointment).
  • Accountable for all concrete and shotcrete production, associated logistics and quality aspects.
  • Accountable for all SHE requirements associated with the operation and maintenance of the batch plant, which includes RAs, Method statements, SLAMS, Environmental and associated audits are being done
  • Interact with all interested and affected parties
  • Prepare and issue all reports regarding performance, quality and costing
  • Attend all meeting outside the batching plant with management
  • Ensure adequate coverage for Batch Plant Supervisors
  • Review annual, monthly, fortnightly, weekly and daily targets
  • Manage the Batching Plant scheduling to ensure that every client’s (concrete user) request for concrete is correctly programmed and itemised to ensure that concrete batching operation is as efficient and harmonious as it can be.
  • Review with the supervisors, the day and night shift targets and overlapping if continuous operation like slides are required
  • Ensure orders are placed by the supervisors and help chase up deliveries from the suppliers of Aggregates, cements, admixture, fibre deliveries etc and manage relationships
  • Overview the quality control in respect of mechanical / electronic equipment e.g. scales and check that daily measurement checks are done
  • Ensure that all maintenance on mechanical and electrical equipment (batching plant, FEL, Spinner and Agicars) is up to date
  • Ensure that all material stocks are being checked and recorded (silo and bin) on a daily basis
  • Check the Batching and transport team are cleaning all equipment on a regular basis so there is no concrete left in equipment and the batching plant is as clean as fitting for a DeBeers installation.
  • Overview all concrete quality and liaise with the independent laboratories on a regular basis on concrete / shotcrete matters
  • Overview that batching staff are managing quality and all documents for strength and slump are being issued with each batch of concrete / shotcrete
  • Do Visual checks on the concrete for conformance. Listen to the concrete / shotcrete placing teams relating to workability and communicate with the independent laboratory until the mixes meet every desire and requirement.
  • Overview that the relevant staff fully understand the capability of the batching software and all the Computer printouts necessary are being extracted for compilation of the reports.
  • Ensure the timesheets of the staff are being correctly processed and submitted. Review overtime and irregular expenditure in relation to the batching and transport budget.
  • Manage the KPA’s of the staff. Note the intention is that the batching staff are all multiskilled and operator/drives are also multiskilled. Furthermore, that there are no general labourers in the team and thus cleanliness of all the plant and equipment is the team’s responsibility and they should be employed with this understanding and managed accordingly.
  • Overview statistical results for the mixes and communicate with the independent laboratory concerns or opportunities
  • Manage the overall discipline of the staff
  • Walk the plant regularly looking for mechanical defects and safety risks.
  • Regularly meet with the staff to encourage, ensure co-operation and cohesion and regularly reinforce batching challenges particularly in respect of cement / water ratios and problems with adding water or any chemicals to already mixed concrete.
  • Reinforce to the batching and transport crews the dangers of man machine interface and working with cement and essential PPE.

Qualifications:

Education required:

  • Grade 12 / N3 / Equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification
  • Valid EB/Code 8 Drivers License
  • Civil Diploma or similar (e.g. Diploma in Concrete Technology)
  • Medical Certificate of Fitness to work underground
  • Computer Literacy

Experience & knowledge required:

Minimum of 3 Years’ experience required as a Senior Foreman Batch Plant

  • Sound knowledge and experience of:
    • Ensure that all equipment are collaborated
    • Generation of quality Compliance report
    • Manages training metrics
    • Understanding of working on a mine
    • Surface & Underground Supply of ready-mix concrete
    • Understanding of shotcrete and fibrecrete
    • Underground condition
    • Concrete and its components
    • HSE risks of working with concrete o Management of staff
    • Preparation of financial and technical records
    • Basic understanding of mechanical equipment
    • Basic understanding of electrical equipment
    • Basic understanding of electronic equipment
    • Good understanding of working with computers
    • Good understanding of costing and cost allocation
