Main purpose of the job 

•    The job purpose is to analyse financial information needs for the PPECB by reviewing existing systems and working out the best way to meet those needs through the design of new systems. To strengthen internal system controls as well as provide greater oversight on transactional integrity.

Chief Inspector-032-018

Kakamas, Northern Cape, South Africa

Job Description

The Operations Department has a vacancy for a Chief Inspector (CI) based in Kakamas, to ensure the correct application of standards and protocols within the PPECB’s legislative mandate. The CI position is a specialist role aimed at transfer of skills and monitoring of consistent technical competence within the legislative framework of the PPECB. The CI has the specific deliverable of ensuring compliance to all relevant procedures, protocols and Service Level Agreements within a defined geographical area.  The position also offers the opportunity to influence business processes and practices.  The successful candidate will be required to be semi-functional, which includes conducting inspections. 

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Supervision of staff and operations in both the Cold Chain and Inspection value streams related to the specified geographical area.
  • Ensuring adequate competency levels of staff within the Harmonization framework.
  • Inspection and certification of perishable products.
  • Inspection of the handling, storage and transport of perishable products.
  • Coordinating compliance to prescribed processes, procedures and protocols within the framework of the Agricultural Product Standards Act.
  • Coordinating compliance to prescribed processes, procedures and protocols within the framework of the Perishable Products Export Control Board Act.
  • Ensure correct application of quality management systems, procedures and work instructions.
  • Ensure adherence to Service Level agreements. 
  • Ensuring effective two- way communication internal and external. 
  • Performance management of those reporting into the role within the framework of the PPECB performance motivation framework.
  • Administrative tasks and reporting related to the execution of services.
  • Accept the responsibility of continuous self- improvement in their area of responsibility according to the PPECB performance system.

Requirements:

  • A tertiary qualification in an agricultural or related discipline with at least 7 years relevant work experience. Please note: Candidates with less experience, but with proven outstanding performance will be considered in line with PPECB’s EE policy. 
  • Knowledge, understanding and experience of all cold chain services relevant to the specified geographical area.
  • Proven competence and experience of citrus and grapes inspection would be compulsory.
  • Proven exposure to pumpkins, fresh dates, pomegranates, grain and dried fruits will be advantageous.
  • Experience as acting chief inspector within the inspections and cold chain disciplines would be advantages
  • Successful completion of LDP will be advantageous.
  • Operational planning; training and organizing skills.
  • Good communication skills and a team player.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Proven track record of taking ownership enabled by responsible and accountable behavior.
  • A valid code 08 driving license and own reliable vehicle.
