HEAD OF DEPARTMENT: DESIGN AND WORKSHOP

Salary: DPSA Level- Assistant Director
Location: National Museum, Bloemfontein

The National Museum, Bloemfontein is seeking to permanently appoint the Head of Department: Design
and Workshop.

Purpose of the Position
The main purpose of the post is to manage the Design and Workshop department. Oversee the process
of planning, design and construction of all exhibitions at the Museum and manage PR and Marketing.
Responsibilities:

  • Planning, design and construction of all exhibitions at the National Museum and satellites
  • Manage design, layout and printing of publications
  • Oversee PR and Marketing, Social Media and Website Management
  • General Management and Administration

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Qualification: Appropriate NQF Level 7 in Art/ Graphic Design/ Architecture etc. coupled with a
postgraduate honours or higher (NQF Level 8) qualification.
A valid (unendorsed) code 8 drivers’ licence.
Experience: Minimum of 5 years proven experience planning, designing and construction of
exhibitions. Must have minimum 2 years in a supervisory or management role. Experience supervising
workshop team to construct exhibitions and associated OHS processes relating to construction.
Experience with PR, marketing and graphic design
Knowledge and experience of design and constructing different types of exhibitions. Knowledge of
planning processes, project management, business planning, procurement, finances, budgeting and
people management. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and excellent presentation skills.
Graphic design software.

written and verbal skills; and willingness to travel.

Project Manager: Art Bank of South Africa

Project Manager: Art Bank of South Africa
(5 Year Fixed Term Contract)
DPSA Level: Assistant Director

Purpose of the Position
The project manager oversees the ArtBankSA project which is hosted at the National
Museum in Bloemfontein. ArtbankSA purchases art from contemporary artists, and the art is
made available for leasing or sale to government, institutions, companies and private

Responsibilities:

  • Planning of the Art BankSA creating the annual business plan and budget for the
    Art Bank of South Africa governance structures and developing project scopes
    and objectives, involving all relevant stakeholders and ensuring technical
    feasibility
  • Develop and oversee appropriate policy and procedures relevant to the
    functioning of the Art Bank of South Africa
  • Oversee the compliance and governance requirements of the Art Bank of South
    Africa, reporting into the governance structures of the Host Institution
  • Establish and maintain financial processes in conjunction with the Museum’s
    Chief Financial Officer
  • Ensure resource availability and allocation
  • Lead the curation of the Art Bank of South Africa Contemporary Visual Art
    Collection for marketing, leasing and/or sales purposes and oversee the
    collections administration
  • Manage all day-to-day activities as well as relevant human resources aspects of
    Art Bank of South Africa personnel
  • Responding to all issues that cannot be resolved by the staff
  • Represent the ArtBanksa to all media including radio, press, digital and TV
  • Drive the sales and marketing strategy to increase revenue
  • Networking within the visual arts community

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

and Public relations, sales and marketing. Must have minimum 2 years in a supervisory or

Knowledge and experience of the contemporary art market in South Africa. Must be able to
work independently with minimum supervision. Knowledge of project management, business
planning, procurement, finances, budgeting and people management. Excellent verbal and
written communication skills and excellent presentation skills.

HEAD OF DEPARTMENT AND PRINCIPAL MUSEUM SCIENTIST: KAROO AND PALAEONTOLOGY

Level: DPSA Assistant Director Level
Purpose of the Position
The purpose of this position is manage the Karoo Palaeontology Department at the National
Museum and conduct international competitive research in Palaeontology and publish
same, whilst ensuring that the collections are expanded and maintained in accordance with
best practice.

Scope
 To manage the Karoo Palaeontology Department on behalf of the National
Museum.
 To undertake original scientific research based on material in the collections
and from elsewhere. All research must be conducted ethically, and research
projects must be in place.
 Supervise the collections management team curation of all the collections to
the highest possible standards and make these collections and associated
information available to researchers locally and throughout the world.
 To develop the collection through targeted fieldwork and survey in southern
Africa.
 To maintain and update the literature and computerised data on the
collections, as necessary.
 To liaise with foreign researchers and organisations on joint projects of
benefit to the Department and to the National Museum as a whole. To offer
services to other researchers, such as reviews and identifications. To make
information and research available through reports, scientific publications and
through attendance at conferences and symposia.
 To facilitate the understanding of this work through lectures and exhibitions to
learners and the public.

Key Performance Areas
Qualification: PHD Palaeontology field. A valid Code 8 drivers licence.
Experience: Minimum 5 years’ experience (after post-doctoral studies) in conducting
scientific research. Must have well established publication record
displaying research productivity. Already showing leadership in the field.
Demonstrated ability to attract research funding grants and work with
national and international research teams on and off the field.
Minimum 2 years supervisory or management experience
Knowledge: All relevant techniques, procedures and requirements to do scientific
research. Specialist knowledge on laboratory techniques, fieldwork and
literature palaeontology preferably Karoo Palaeontology
Personal Attitudes: work under pressure; good interpersonal relations; good written skills,
administratively adept, editing.
