Introduction
The Western Cape Provincial Parliament has a vacancy for the role of Language Practitioner (English–Xhosa).
This role is part of the Stakeholder Management and Communication Services section and reports to the Senior Language Practitioner.
Primary Responsibilities
- Provision of language services, including translating, editing, proofreading and revision.
- Provision of language advice.
- Assistance with the development and recording of terminology.
- Assistance with the maintenance of databases, including the terminology list, style guides, style sheets and lists of provincial and national acts.
Summary of duties and responsibilities
Language services: Translation
- Provide an efficient and effective translation service for the language combination English–Xhosa.
- Accurately translate documents from English to Xhosa and from Xhosa to English.
- Comprehensive computer software knowledge and skills (MS Word, including the use of track changes and comments, as well as computer-assisted translation tools) to support this task.
Language services: Editing
- Provide an efficient and effective editing service for Xhosa and English.
- Accurately edit documents in Xhosa and English.
- Comprehensive computer software knowledge and skills (MS Word, including review functions such as the use of track changes, comments and comparison, as well as PDF markup tools) to support this task.
Language services: Proofreading
- Provide an efficient and effective proofreading service for Xhosa and English.
- Accurately proofread documents in Xhosa and English.
- Comprehensive computer software knowledge and skills (MS Word, including review functions such as the use of track changes, comments and comparison, as well as PDF markup tools) to support this task.
Language services: Revision
- Provide an efficient and effective revision service for Xhosa and English.
- Accurately revise documents in Xhosa and English.
- Comprehensive computer software knowledge and skills (MS Word, including review functions such as the use of track changes, comments and comparison, as well as PDF markup tools) to support this task.
Knowledge databases: Terminology
- Record, maintain and develop terminology.
- Accurately record new terminology, maintain existing terminology and develop translation equivalents where necessary.
Knowledge databases: Style guides and style sheets
- Maintain existing style guides and style sheets for Xhosa and English.
- Maintain and update Xhosa and English style guides by adding the necessary guidelines and removing outdated and obsolete entries.
Knowledge databases: Acts
- Maintain and expand the lists of short titles of provincial and national acts.
- Expand the lists of provincial and national acts by accurately adding the short titles of acts when they are published in the Provincial Gazette and Government Gazette, and correct existing entries.
Language advice
- Provide evidence-based advice about language usage and style when requested.
Essential Requirements
Applicants wanting to be considered for the role must have:
- A bachelor’s degree in languages (with Xhosa as major) or a related field, including general linguistics, language practice and translation studies
- At least three years’ active experience in language practice in the language combination English–Xhosa
- Technical proficiency and fluency in Xhosa and English
- Translation, editing, proofreading and revision skills in Xhosa and English
- Knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Western Cape Languages Act, 1998 (Act 13 of 1998)
- Written and numerical skills
- Computer skills, including MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Outlook, MS Teams, Adobe Acrobat (PDF) and computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools
