of the Directive on Compulsory Capacity Development, Mandatory Training
Days & Minimum Entry Requirements for SMS that was introduced on 1 April
2015, a requirement for all applicants for SMS posts from 1 April 2020 is a
successful completion of the Senior Management Pre-Entry Programme as
endorsed by the National School of Government (NSG) prior to appointment.

Furthermore, Shortlisted candidates must provide proof of successful

undertake two pre-entry assessments. One will be a practical exercise to
determine a candidate’s suitability based on the post’s technical and generic
requirements and the other must be an integrity (ethical conduct) assessment.
Following the interview and the technical exercise of all SMS posts, the
Selection Panel will recommend candidates to attend a generic managerial
competency assessment in compliance with the DPSA Directive on the

DUTIES : Perform access control. Identify suspicious conduct. Ensure that unauthorised

equipment and assets of the department leave the building/ premises
unauthorised. Perform proper lock up for all offices and access points. Operate
and monitor control room security equipment. Ensure safety in the building
and premises. Undertake building /premises patrols to identify and check. Lock
or unlock main doors and trellidoors as required. Note offices that have been
left unlocked and lock the mentioned office. Fire hazards exposed electronical

cleaning of harbor areas, administration, dry docking and safety policies.
General administration skills, Maintenance and equipment. Basic finance
principles. OHSA Procedures. Ability to work under extreme pressure, ability to
work with difficult persons and to resolve conflicts, ability to work long hours
voluntarily and ability to gather and analyse information. A valid Driving license.


DUTIES : Infrastructure maintenance. Cleaning and painting of walls, roof and ceiling,
filling for potholes, clearing road edges/fallen trees, watering of plants,
skoffeling along the fence and around the building and maintain hedge trees
and campsite. Rehabilitation of degraded forest areas. Slashing of alien plants,
planting of indigenous seeding. Manage fires. Skoffelling of fire belts and tracer
belts, spraying and burning of fire belts, firefighting and sharpening of tools
such as hand hoes etc. Manage woodlot. Reduction and coppice shots 2 and
3 stands/stumps, Alien invasive control within woodlots and clear felling of
poles left in the Woodlock after harvesting of timber has been conducted.

REQUIREMENTS : National Diploma (NQF 6) in Biological Science, or equivalent qualification as
recognised by SAQA. Compulsory registration with the South African Council
for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) as certificated natural scientist.
Three (3) years’ relevant post-qualification technical experience is required.
Experience in research design and application of data collection methods. All
shortlisted candidates, including the SMS, shall undertake two pre-entry
assessments. One will be a practical exercise to determine a candidate’s
suitability based on the post’s technical and generic requirements and the other
must be an integrity (ethical conduct) assessment. Familiarity with data
management/ quality control and parameters for validation. Computer literacy,
including coding. Experience in data management and analysis
software/programs. Understanding of practical application; design;
maintenance and/or calibration of marine monitoring equipment/systems.
Ability to organise and participate in field work and/or go to sea for extended
