The Innovation Consultant (Digital – ICT) will drive digital innovation and advanced data analytics initiatives at Rand Water. The role focuses on leveraging digital technologies, big data analytics, Generative AI, and information systems to generate insights, improve decision-making, and support innovation programs across the potable water production and distribution value chain.

Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
Master’s degree or equivalent in one of the following:
•Data Analytics
•Artificial Intelligence
•Computer Science / Informatics / IT
•Engineering / Science / Mathematics / Statistics
•Business Management and Informatics

Experience
•Proven experience in digital transformation, innovation consulting, and smart infrastructure.
•Strong understanding and application of emerging technologies (IoT, ML, AI, Agentic AI).
•Minimum 5 years’ experience in digital technology, ICT, data analytics, or business intelligence.
•Experience in information management systems, IT applications, or information architecture.
•Project management experience.
•Ability to translate complex technical concepts into actionable business solutions.

Advantageous
•Experience in utilities.
•Enterprise architecture or consulting experience.
•Knowledge of Python, software development and business intelligence tools.
•Programme or portfolio management experience.
•Proven track record of application of emerging technologies (IoT, ML, AI, Agentic AI).

Primary Duties
•Identify opportunities to leverage IoT sensors, data analytics, AI, and digital twins.
•Lead and manage ICT-related innovation programs and digital technology projects.
•Analyze and interpret large datasets to identify trends and generate actionable insights for operational improvement.
•Evaluate and pilot new digital technologies, including data analytics, business intelligence, and information management systems.
•Develop innovation proposals and business cases for the adoption of digital solutions.
•Collaborate with engineering, operations, and IT teams to pilot, test, scale, and embed smart technologies.
•Collaborate with external partners (research institutions, technology providers, and industry partners) to develop new products and solutions.
•Promote digital maturity and support the development of data-driven decision-making within Rand Water.
•Engage stakeholders and build a culture of innovation across the organization.
•Manage project governance, budgets, and reporting within the Innovation Program.
•Contribute to innovation strategy, risk mitigation, and organizational change initiatives.

The primary duty of the Innovation Consultant (Technology) is to identify, evaluate and manage the development of innovative engineering and technology solutions to enhance Rand Water’s operational performance, resilience and competitiveness. The role focuses on assessing new technologies, managing innovation programmes and supporting the implementation of solutions that add value to the organisation’s core water services.

Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
•BTech or BSc Degree in Engineering or related scientific discipline.
•Professional registration or eligibility for registration with ECSA, WISA, IWA, or similar professional bodies.
•Experience in technology innovation, digital transformation and consulting within infrastructure or utilities (water, wastewater, chemical, or energy industries).
•Experience in project management with a proven track record in managing multi-disciplinary engineering projects.
•Ability to bridge technical solutions with business strategy.
•Analytical mindset with a focus on delivering measurable impact.

Advantageous
•Experience in the water sector or similar asset-intensive industries is highly desirable.
•Experience in alternative water treatment technologies and solutions.
•Project Management certification.
•Masters of PhD degree in Engineering or Science.
•Qualification in Innovation Management.
