Introduction

The Rigging Team Leader is responsible for leading a regional rigging team, overseeing mast and tower rigging operations, and ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant rigging activities. The role ensures the integrity of broadcasting infrastructure by executing mast maintenance, rigging projects, equipment installations, and supporting operational continuity in alignment with Sentech’s corporate objectives


Duties & Responsibilities

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

1.     Rigging Operations & Maintenance

  • Maintain equipment and infrastructure on Sentech sites and client’s premises.
  • Maintain operational information and finance systems.
  • Play an active role in the improvement of facilities, standards and development of systems.

  • Conduct corrective maintenance on the masts by applying knowledge, competence and experience, while keeping within agreed norms to ensure that the masts always remain operational and reliable.
  • Schedule and effect preventative maintenance as per annual maintenance plan and task list that result in maintained equipment according to set standards.
  • Keep the section and workshop clean and check tools to ensure their availability at all times.
  • Conduct regular inspections and maintenance of antennas and masts
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and protocols during maintenance.
  • Document maintenance activities and report findings to the line manager.
  • Participate in scheduled maintenance activities and upgrades on the sites
  • Monitored and reacted faults according to Fault Handling procedures.
  • Lead mast and rigging projects, ensuring adherence to engineering and safety standards
  • Supervise rigging activities including antenna, feeder cable, and RF system installations
  • Conduct mast and tower inspections, preventative and corrective maintenance
  • Ensure compliance with fall protection, rope access, and lifting protocols

2.     Equipment Installation and Configuration

  • Install equipment/ antennas and infrastructure on Sentech sites and client’s premises.
  • Perform/complete all ad hoc tasks as per instruction to ensure that all network stays functional.
  • Install and commission and repair the antenna to achieve full functionality within broadcasting specifications.
  • Checked sites / network elements for functionality through the agreed KPIs. Flagged any shift in traffic patterns for analysis purposes.

3. Infrastructure Support and Issue Resolution

  • Function as part of the Rigging team.
  • Make simple and harness assemblies.
  • Prepare connector, cables assemblies with the use of crimping tools and heavy-duty tools
  • Collaborate with all operation centres to maintain and improve quality.
  • Follow quality control procedures for configuration control of parts lists and drawing revisions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain a high level of concentration and the ability to identify problems immediately and resolve them.

4. Reporting and Documentation

  • Produce technical reports when required.
  • Maintain detailed records of all work activities, including maintenance, installations, and technical support interactions.
  • Generate regular reports on maintenance activities and issue resolution.
  • Collaborate with the line manger to create technical documentation and standard operating procedures.
  • Participate in knowledge sharing within the Rigging team.
  • Assist in maintaining an up-to-date database of regional infrastructure equipment and tools.
  • Documented SOPs for all rigging work.
  • Performed audits and kept network configuration documents updated.

5.  Quality Assurance and Compliance

  • Implement Configuration Control Policies and Procedures, baselines and configuration accounting.
  • Ensure that all work is performed according to industry and company standards.
  • Conduct regular quality checks on the masts and maintenance activities.
  • Stay updated with industry trends, regulations, and compliance requirements.
  • Assist in conducting audits and compliance assessments as needed.
  • Collaborate with the compliance team to address any identified issues.

6.     Team Management

  • Supervise and mentor a team the rigging team while fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and professional growth.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, provide constructive feedback, and identify training needs to enhance the team’s skills and capabilities.
  • Motivate, guide and support the rigging team.
  • Lead mast and rigging projects, ensuring adherence to engineering and safety standards
  • Supervise rigging activities including antenna, feeder cable, and RF system installations
  • Conduct mast and tower inspections, preventative and corrective maintenance
  • Ensure compliance with fall protection, rope access, and lifting protocols

Desired Experience & Qualification

Qualifications:

  • N3/ National Senior Certificate (Matric)
  • Rigging Trade Test Certificate.
  • Level 3 rope Access accredited qualification
  • Code 10 driver’s license

Experience:

  • 5 years rigging experience with 3 years operating at supervisory level.
  • Proven experience in mast/tower rigging operations, RF antenna installations, and structural maintenance

Knowledge:

  • Understanding of telecommunications rigging standards, mast/tower safety protocols, and OHS regulations
  • Knowledge of antenna, RF, and satellite rigging systems
  • Strong safety, health, and environmental compliance orientation
  • Ability to lead and supervise mast work at heights (up to 300m)
  • Competent in rope access, rigging techniques, and lifting operations
  • Knowledge of basic electronics and signal transmission advantageous
  • Willingness to travel extensively and work away from home
  • Physically and mentally fit to climb masts/towers
  • Be available for call outs in the events of emergencies.
  • Be prepared to drive long distances and work long hours when required.
  • Be prepared to work away from home on a regular basis.
  • Ability and willingness to climb masts of up to 300m.
  • Be self-motivated and take responsibility for his/her career development in Sentech.
