Key responsibilities:
- Conceptualise, guide and manage R&D projects within the water value-chain infrastructure. - Development of operations and maintenance plans for water and wastewater infrastructure.

Qualifications, skills and experience:
- A Master’s degree or equivalent in Civil engineering with a minimum of ten years¿ experience in the field of water engineering;
- At least ten years’ experience in design of water and wastewater infrastructure;
- Experience in working with public sector clients (e.g., municipalities, water boards, government departments);
- Experience in developing and/or updating operations and maintenance plans for water and wastewater infrastructure;
- Experience in water conservation and water demand management (non-revenue water programs) in the municipal space;
- Experience in water resources planning and design;
- Experience with road engineering and associated civil works.
- Experience in construction project management for water and wastewater infrastructure;
- Demonstrated ability to align municipal water infrastructure projects with regional strategic frameworks, including compliance with the National Water Act;
- Professional registration with ECSA;
- Practical knowledge and application of hydraulic modelling is essential;
- Proven track record in project management and research project leadership;
- Excellent English communication, presentation and writing skills, including the publication of technical outputs;

The CSIR Consulting and Analytical Services (CAS) unit has a vacancy for a Laboratory Analyst in the Environmental Analytical Laboratory in the Smart Places Cluster. The incumbent will be responsible for carrying out routine and specialised analyses in an ISO 17025-accredited laboratory, and deliver accurate, efficient and effective results at minimum turnaround times. This position is based in Stellenbosch.

Key responsibilities:
- Independently conduct routine and specialised analysis for the laboratory.
- Independently set up, operate and verify performance of instrumentation (e.g. ICP -OES, ICP MS, FIA, Elemental Analysers, etc.).
- Interpret data scientifically against ISO 17025 quality criteria, industry/legislation
- related criteria and standards, and use specialist knowledge to ensure that correct
- and valid information is provided to clients and stakeholders.
- Validate standard analytical methods to prove `fitness for purpose¿
- Evaluate and improve accuracy, sensitivity, productivity, effectiveness, efficiency and detection limits of routine analytical methods.
- Perform scheduled instrument maintenance and troubleshooting/diagnostics to minimise downtime.
- Assist and/or facilitate the technical component of ISO 17025 requirements of the laboratory.
- Responsible for technical signatory for at least 20% of all accredited methods. Independently verify results against accepted quality and performance criteria (i.e. QC control charts, reference materials, duplicates, etc.).
- Carry out routine analyses for simple and complex methods/instruments in the laboratory independently within required quality, EHS and production parameters.
Qualifications, skills and experience:
- A BTech or BSc in chemistry or related is required with a minimum of five years¿ experience in an accredited analytical lab is required.
- All international qualifications require an evaluation report / certificate issued by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
- Preference will be given to candidates with experience in environmental labs.
- Must have experience as a technical signatory in a testing laboratory.
- Must be able to interact with peers and supervisors.
- Must be able to interpret analytical data for integrity and against known quality criteria.
- Must have sound knowledge of analytical chemistry as it relates to the operations of the laboratory.
- A firm understanding of Laboratory Information Management Systems will be an advantage.
- Good grasp of method validation processes.

About the job:
The CSIR has a vacancy for Instrumentation Technician in the Mining Testing and Training group within the Mining cluster. The incumbent will be responsible to ensure that instrumentation is procured, stored, maintained, repaired, calibrated, and replaced as required in support of operational readiness in the Kloppersbos facility and the Cottesloe mining testing laboratories. Key responsibilities:
- Maintain calibration of measurement instruments and maintain the calibration schedule;
- Procure instrumentation, consumables and measurement instruments as required by testing projects and routine testing services;
- Develop test and measurement methods suitable to the RDI operational needs and customer testing requirements;
- Install, set-up and commission instrumentation and related equipment in the laboratory and at test facilities in the danger area as needed for testing;
- Undertake system checks, data recording, data integrity checks, fault finding and fixing during testing operations and do data post-processing after recording.
- Maintain instrumentation, cabling, transducers, data recording equipment and related tools and equipment incl. repair, clean and store ready for use.
- Support the Manager, Supervisor and Explosives Manager in ensuring that testing and training operations are carried out safely;
- Maintain and upgrade as required the instrumentation and control systems in the laboratory, milling plant and testing facilities in the danger area;
- Identify and communicate suggestions for continuous improvement.
Qualifications, skills and experience:
- A National Diploma in electronic/ electrical/ mechanical engineering or NQF Level 6 qualification;
- All international qualifications require an evaluation report / certificate issued by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
- At least five years’ experience in control and instrumentation, or in use and maintenance of instruments and equipment in a mechanical laboratory and / or mechanical field measurements and data recording;
- Knowledge of transducers for physical measurements (e.g. force, acceleration, pressure, temperature) and data acquisition equipment;
- Knowledge and ability to do post-processing of recorded data including the identification and clean-up of spurious data.
- Basic understanding of occupational health and safety protocols and standards;
- Ability to prepare Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs);
- Good verbal and written communication skills;
- Planning and organizing skills;
- Strong mathematical skills;
- Mechanical, electrical, and electronic troubleshooting ability;
- Operational requirements include:
- Lifting equipment operator;
- Driver’s license.

The CSIR has a vacancy for a Chief Information Security Officer who will be responsible for leading the Information Security Office and maintaining a comprehensive CSIR-wide information security programme to ensure that all CSIR information assets are adequately protected against current/future and internal/external threats. Key responsibilities:
Leadership
- Develop, review and drive implementation of information security policy, strategy and short (annual)- and long-range operational plans in order to ensure secure operations across the CSIR;
- Maintain a comprehensive, CSIR-wide information security programme;
- Oversee ISO and Cybersecurity Centre of Innovation managers and teams, allocating resources to ensure that staff deliver secure and robust IT solutions to the CSIR’s requirements;
- Manage and develop staff to ensure high calibre personnel who achieve performance objectives in support of the CSIR mission and vision as they pertain to information security;
- Conduct performance management contracting and reviews for all staff at the recommended periods, for the purpose of managing and improving service delivery.
Information Security
- Provide leadership and vision for information security at the CSIR;
- Provide managerial oversight in the development and implementation of an information security programme, ensuring the programme is continuously updated in alignment with the changing threat landscape;
- Determine projects and priorities for all CSIR information security issues;
- Direct the dissemination of CSIR information security policies;
- Oversee development of an effective information security incident response plan and determine metrics measure effectiveness;
- Lead the response to information security incidents and act as the primary control point in the case of any significant information security incidents;
- Define vulnerability management programme and oversee the planning and execution of vulnerability audits, penetration testing, or forensic IT audits and investigations, ensuring the results improve CSIR’s information security through developing metrics to prove its effectiveness;
- Oversee development of CSIR wide information security training and awareness programme
- Oversee the development and implementation of all necessary information security controls;
- Understand and interact with RD&I divisions and support functions across the CSIR (through risk management or other committees) to ensure the consistent application of policies and standards across all technology projects, systems, and services;
- Advise the CSIR regarding internal or external information security threats to allow CSIR to focus efforts and allocate budget for their mitigation;
- Provide technical guidance on information security products and technical controls to the CSIR business as a whole;
- Manage the information security team to proactively analyse, and directly respond to internal and external threats to information infrastructure and minimise / mitigate risk;
- Conduct risk assessments in alignment with the CSIR Risk Management Process;
- Ensure security controls in place support the compliance to national data and protection of information regulations;
- Build formal relationship with 3rd parties, vendors and industry as well as threat intelligence feed providers and establish forum for information exchange;
- Stay abreast of changing technologies, developing threats, including cybersecurity risks, and regulatory changes affecting the CSIR¿s information security, and respond accordingly;
- Understand and examine the impact of new technologies on the CSIR¿s information security, establishing processes to review the implementation of new technologies to ensure security compliance.

- Develop and manage the Information Security Office budget;

Qualifications, skills and experience:
- A Bachelor’s degree in information technology (IT) Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, or related field with at least eight years experience in ICT services, of which five years should be in a management role;
- Must also have five years relevant experience managing Information Security and risk, particularly in large organisations or projects;
- Must be in possession of a Security clearance certificate or be prepared to undergo clearance

About the job:
The CSIR has a Master’s Studentship opportunity in the Emerging Digital Technologies for Fourth Industrial Revolution (EDT4IR) Research Centre within the Next Generation Enterprises and Institutions Cluster. The incumbent will be responsible for undertaking original research and development in computer vision and artificial intelligence (AI), with a specific focus on the intelligent visual inspection. The aim is to develop a modular, AI-powered platform for automated defect detection across multiple industrial domains, leveraging foundation models such as Vision Transformers (ViT) and large segmentation models. This position is based in Pretoria and will report to the Research Group Leader.
Research areas:
- Foundation models for defect segmentation and anomaly detection (e.g. SAM, SAM2, Vision Transformers)
- Domain adaptation and transfer learning for industrial inspection tasks
- Explainability and interpretability methods for AI-based inspection systems
- Dataset preparation, annotation workflows, and model benchmarking for defect detection
- Real-time deployment of segmentation models for industrial computer vision
- Multimodal data integration and AI-assisted quality control systems
Key responsibilities:
- Prepare research proposal to be approved by both the CSIR and the university;
- Prepare a written literature overview of the current state-of-the-art around the research topic;
- Perform original research to solve the open research problem that the student identified in his/her proposal;
- Produce sufficient quantity and quality of peer-reviewed publications around this research topic;
- Compile the master’s thesis and defend the work successfully;
- Contribute to extra activities that may be outside the scope of the master’s research as per the needs of the research group. The amount of such work shall be limited to 20% of the total time.
Qualifications, skills and experience:
- An Honours degree in computer science/engineering, electrical/electronic engineering, information technology or a related field;
- The ability to generate research questions and hypotheses: Review, critique and synthesize a body of research, identifying significant gaps in knowledge, methods, and study subjects to develop research questions and testable hypotheses;
- Effectively communicate issues, research findings and implications of research verbally and in writing to appropriate professional and public audiences;
- Enthusiastic and self-motivated individuals who take ownership and initiative and have the willingness to learn;
- The ability to work well under pressure as part of a team and as well as independently
- Foundational knowledge of machine learning, deep learning, and computer vision; familiarity with Python and common ML frameworks (e.g. PyTorch, TensorFlow) will be advantageous;
- A good peer-reviewed publication record will be advantageous.

About the job:
The CSIR has a vacancy for a Master’s Studentship: Electronic Warfare in the Radar and Electronic Warfare Impact Area, within the Defence and Security Cluster. The incumbent will be responsible for undertaking original research and development in Electronic Warfare with the Artificial Intelligence in EW, Electronic Support/Attack, EW Modelling and Simulation/Signal Processing or any other EW related topics. This position is based in Pretoria.

Key responsibilities:
- Prepare a research proposal to be approved by both the CSIR and the university;
- Prepare a written literature overview of the current state-of-the-art relevant to the research topic;
- Perform original research to solve the open research problem(s) that the student identified in his/her proposal;
- Produce sufficient quantity and quality of peer-reviewed publications based on the Master’s research topic;
- Compile the Master’s dissertation and defending the work successfully; and
- Contribute to extra project activities that may be outside the scope of the master research as per the needs of the research group. The amount of such work shall be limited to 20% of the total time.
Qualifications, skills and experience:
- A Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree in electronic/computer engineering or a related/relevant field;
- Register for a Master’s qualification within the South African university (to be agreed upon with the CSIR co-supervisor).
- Knowledge of the following will be an advantage: MATLAB, Julia, Python and/or C++.
- Knowledge of the following will be an advantage: Antennas, Radio Frequency (RF) systems, Electromagnetic Theory and Propagation.
- Knowledge of electronic hardware and software implementation.
- Knowledge and exposure in software development for experimentation and prototyping.
- Good understanding of the scientific method: design of experiments, running experiments, critical analysis of results, and dissemination of knowledge.
- Good communication skills (verbal and written) and ability to interact efficiently with diverse teams of people.

Senior Software Engineer
About the job:
The CSIR has a vacancy for a Senior Software Engineer in the Command, Control and Integrated Systems Impact Area within the Defence and Security Cluster. The incumbent will be responsible for designing and developing software solutions, including middleware and software architectures for command and control, situation awareness, integration, interoperability in military, non-military and safety and security domains. This position is based in Pretoria and will report to the Research Group Leader.

Key responsibilities:
- Lead the design and development of complex software systems and architectures;
- Design, implement, and optimise Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning (ML) driven solutions and pipelines;
- Drive technical decision-making for research and development platforms;
- Collaborate with researchers to translate research concepts into software;
- Oversee code quality, testing practices, and system performance;
- Integrate software with sensors, data sources, and external systems;
- Contribute to technical reporting and research outputs;
- Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend adoption where appropriate.
- Proactively research technologies, developments, tool improvements and their processes as well as deployments to ensure increased productivity;
- Contribute to proposal development to secure funding for the research group;
- Lead the development of research publications;
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers and students.
Qualifications, skills and experience:
- An Honours degree in computer science/engineering, software engineering or related fields with at least five years’ experience in software development focusing in artificial intelligence and machine learning;
- A Master’s degree will be advantageous;
- Solid understanding and practical experience in AI and/or machine learning;
- Significant professional experience in software engineering;
- Strong proficiency in one or more programming languages (e.g. Python, C++, Java);
- Proven experience designing and maintaining large or complex software systems;
- Experience with data processing, algorithm development, and model evaluation;
- Strong systems thinking and problem-solving ability;
- Experience working in research, experimental, or innovation-driven environments;
- Ability to lead technical workstreams and mentor less experienced staff;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
